**6**/10 It’s a good film. A fun, mostly clean family adventure.

3/10. I’m unfortunately not the target audience for it. Which is a shame given that I was the target audience for Minecraft back in 2010/2011 when it was in beta and had it’s initial full release.
The movie largely seems like it was written with the intention of generating memes rather than doing a lot to pay homage to Minecraft’s rich history. It means that this movie hasn’t aged particularly well despite still being a relatively new movie.
I want to compare it to the Mario and Sonic movies. Now, I know the Mario movies aren’t exactly known for their deep plot, but both Mario movies do an excellent job at paying homage to the Mario franchise as a whole, pulling out a lot of deep cuts and references. It’s a movie I can have fun with, and still enjoy on a revisit. The Sonic Movies on the otherhand reimagine a lot, but do it in a way where throughout the movies you can see them clearly adapting some of the rich stories from the franchise.
I’m personally still hoping we see something from the Netflix show soon. I’m concerned we really haven’t had anything else yet, but I’m hoping if the Minecraft Movie is the fun memefest, the animated Netflix series will maybe take a more serious stab at using elements like Minecraft’s implied stories through worldbuilding. Laughs are fun. I expect laughs. But I think I just want something that I as a Minecraft fan in my early 30s can enjoy.

2 at best. It seemed made by people who didn’t involve themselves in the game and read a summary.

I’d give it a 5, my 7yr old kid would probably give it a 10.

4 as a movie and adaptation, entertainment-wise maybe 6.5
