LEGO Ninjago has arrived in LEGO Fortnite in a big way, blessing players of the free-to-play LEGO Fortnite Odyssey experience with an entirely new island and an action-packed campaign to go with it, all based on the world of Ninjago.

This is easily one of the most substantial updates to LEGO Fortnite Odyssey so far, so we’ve gone ahead and broken down everything you might want to know about the massive Ninjago: Rise of the Ninja update before you dive in – either as an existing LEGO Fortnite fan or a brand-new player.

What is LEGO Fortnite Odyssey?

LEGO Fortnite Odyssey is the main LEGO mode within Fortnite, letting players explore a huge open world in a survival-crafting adventure. Gather resources to create tools and weapons as well as construct new facilities and buildings, build and develop your village, explore a diverse land full of weird and wonderful flora and fauna and more – all playable in online co-op and split-screen (depending on platform).

Is LEGO Fortnite Ninjago: Rise of the Ninja free?

As with every mode and big content update in Fortnite, LEGO Fortnite Ninjago: Rise of the Ninja is free-to-play from beginning to end, and everything that you can optionally buy with V-Bucks or real money is purely cosmetic.

What’s in the LEGO Fortnite Odyssey Ninjago: Rise of the Ninja update?

More than just a simple collaboration with some tie-in skins and items, Ninjago: Rise of the Ninja is a full-fledged update to the LEGO Fortnite Odyssey mode that includes a whole new island to explore and campaign to conquer.

Kicking off at the Ninja Monastery, your adventure begins by meeting some friendly and familiar faces in Lloyd and Seliel. Lloyd explains that mysterious portals have been popping up throughout the land, bringing with them dangerous Betrayer armies. Before your arrival, Kai and Cole managed to leap through one of the portals and disappear, and Jay has run off to pursue the Betrayers, so it’s up to you to make your way around the island and figure out what’s going on while completing missions and increasing your Ninja Mastery…

Ninja Mastery

Becoming a ninja means mastering Spinjitzu, and in Ninjago: Rise of the Ninja that means finding or crafting Spinjitzu Scrolls to gain new moves to help you get around the island and face down fierce beasts and rivals. These also include Elemental Spinjitzu Scrolls for the elements of Fire, Earth and Lightning, containing powerful moves that’ll put you at an advantage over elementally-charged enemies.

The update also adds a whole new stream of Masteries to conquer, each full of abilities to unlock along with recipes for new Scrolls, Relics and Charms.

New Ninjago items and gear

While a lot of the familiar LEGO Fortnite Odyssey materials and items remain in the Ninjago: Rise of the Ninja update, there are also some thematic twists to be found! Things like Wood and Granite have been superseded by Bamboo and Kozustone, while there are a heap of completely new resources to collect, like Elemental Inks to craft those all-important Ninja Scrolls.

Even if you’ve played a heap of LEGO Fortnite Odyssey before, there are a ton of new bits to collect and craft, all on your way to mastering the path of the Ninja. You’re given some entry-level Nunchucks right from the beginning of the Ninjago campaign, but you’ll eventually earn the right to wield Shuriken as well, and with proper crafting you’ll make powerful and even elemental versions of these!

Can I play with my existing LEGO Fortnite world?

Absolutely. When you load into the Ninjago: Rise of the Ninja experience you’ll have the option of starting a new world (ie, the save state with all of your progress) or loading up an existing one. In either case, you can travel freely between the new Ninjago island and the regular LEGO Fortnite Odyssey – and if you loaded a previous world you’ll find everything intact there!

Can I play as Ninjago characters in Fortnite Battle Royale?

Yes! While we usually see full-scale Fortnite characters turned into LEGO minifigures for use in the LEGO Fortnite modes, for the first time ever with the Ninjago update we’re seeing it go the other way. That means that Kai, Jay, Cole and Zane have all been given the human treatment, ready to go in the regular Fortnite modes.

And don’t worry, Lloyd, Nya and Master Wu are also on the way, and will show up sometime in 2026.

Here’s how they all look:

What’s in the LEGO Fortnite Ninjago: Rise of the Ninja battle pass?

The Ninjago-themed LEGO Pass in Fortnite contains 30 unlockable items, from LEGO decor usable across the LEGO Fortnite modes to new loading screens, emotes, building prefabs and more. Those who purchase the Ninjago LEGO Pass will get instant access to the Fire Master Kai outfit, containing both the human and minifigure variants:

And at the end of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th pages of the Ninjago LEGO Pass, you’ll be able to claim the Palace of the Oni, Ninja Dragon Temple and Ninja Island Monastery builds:

What’s in the Fortnite Shop for LEGO Ninjago?

For dedicated LEGO Ninjago fans, there are a heap of exciting items in the Fortnite Shop to celebrate the launch of Ninjago: Rise of the Ninja, including character outfits for Jay, Cole and Zane – all of which include both their LEGO minifigure and human-scale Fortnite outfits.

Here’s what you can buy now. Keep in mind these will all leave the Fortnite Shop on Thursday Dec 18 at midnight GMT / 1AM CET / 11AM AEDT / 4PM Dec 17 PST, but as with most Fortnite gear they’ll more than likely return in the future!
