Factorio Nintendo Switch 2 Edition announced

Factorio’s Nintendo Switch 2 Edition will be a free upgrade for owners of the base game.

Wube Software has confirmed that Factorio will be getting a Switch 2 upgrade. It’ll bring enhancements to resolution, performance, and loading times, among other updates. There’s no timetable for the release, but Wube Software has confirmed that it will be a free upgrade for players who already own Factorio on Switch.

Robert Asaftei, a programmer at Wube Software, announced the game’s Nintendo Switch 2 Edition in a blog post. In it, he says that he was interested in developing a Switch 2 version of Factorio “ever since rumors about the console appeared.” Fans have also been clamoring for it, as the first forum posts asking about a Switch 2 upgrade predate the console’s release.

Asaftei laid out the changes that players can expect to see in Factorio’s Switch 2 Edition:

Better resolution. The game will run on the screen’s native 1080p resolution instead of 720p. When docked, it supports all resolutions, including 2160p (4K).
Variable refresh rate support for the console’s screen.
Some higher quality animations.
Some higher resolution sprites.
Other visual improvements.
Faster loading times.
Ability to build much larger bases.
Mouse mode support. Using the Joy-Con Mouse Sensor, the left or right Joy-Con can be used as a mouse.

The upgrade to Factorio’s Switch 2 Edition will be free, because, in Asaftei’s words, “We don’t believe paying for a technical upgrade is reasonable.” The Space Age DLC will also get these new Switch 2 features, and is priced at $35.

It’s been a busy week for Switch 2 port news. In just the past few days, we’ve seen Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition and Assassin’s Creed Shadows announced for the hybrid console. On the other side of things, FromSoftware recently delayed Elden Ring’s Switch 2 release to next year.
