TOPEKA, Kan. (KCTV) – Kansas has reached a substantial settlement with Roblox, an interactive gaming platform used by millions of children.
Attorney General Kris Kobach announced Tuesday that the state and Roblox agreed to more than $10 million in financial commitments in a settlement that requires the gaming company to implement and maintain child-safety reforms. The reforms are designed to give parents stronger tools and keep minors away from harmful contact with unknown adults, Kobach’s office said.
“Parents should not have to compete with predators and poorly designed platforms just to keep their kids safe online,” Kobach said. “This settlement puts real money, real tools, and real accountability on the table. Kansas children deserve age-appropriate content and meaningful parental controls.”
As part of the settlement, Roblox will pay $9.8 million to the Office of the Attorney General over three years. The company will also underwrite a $500,000 public awareness campaign focused on online child safety for the next three years.
If Roblox fails to comply with any terms of the agreement, the company would also owe $10 million in damages.
Some of the safety reforms Roblox agreed to include but are not limited to:
Requiring all users undergo age-assurance measures so that users only have access to age-appropriate content.Expanded parental controls with a linked parent account.Protecting users under 18 from chatting with unknown adults by restricting chat, by default, to users within the same or similar age groups.Enhanced chat-moderation tools and proactive steps to avoid communications being taken off-platform.
The settlement with Roblox is Kobach’s second win with a tech company. In August, Kobach’s office announced a it was part of a multistate agreement with Meta, the social media company that owns Facebook and Instagram.
