Every life sim in the Animal Crossing mould carries a quiet contradiction. It sells calm, then hands you a to-do list: the loan to repay, the fish to catch, the neighbour waiting on a visit. Hokko Life, the community sim that solo developer Robert Tatnell built under his studio Wonderscope Games and that Team17 published, was openly an homage to that tradition, a town to furnish, farm and fish in. Its spin-off, Hokko Spaces, asks a sharper question of the genre: what is left of the cosy game when you take the chores away?

The answer, by the look of it, is the decorating. Hokko Spaces is a sandbox of miniature diorama worlds, small self-contained scenes that the player furnishes for the anthropomorphic animal residents of Hokko’s world. In the announcement, Team17 and Wonderscope frame it as the colourful aesthetic of Hokko joined to a casual sandbox, and the store page states the premise even more plainly: no rules, no stress, just cozy dioramas and chill vibes. There is no town to run and no economy to balance. The scene is the whole game.

The toolkit is where that idea gets concrete. The release lists more than 300 decorative items, from campfires, benches and picnic baskets to planters, picket fences and a wide spread of flowers, plus five block types, among them stone cobbles, grass and sand, to shape the ground itself. Each of the four seasons comes with two weather options, and the time of day can be adjusted too, so a single plot can move from sakura drifting on a spring evening to the first frost of a winter morning. In practice, season and weather work less like settings than like lighting: the same corner, re-lit, becomes a different picture.
The residents are the audience for that picture. Twenty-six furry visitors can be unlocked through deliberately low-bar goals, such as clearing 20 weeds from a diorama, and once they arrive they wander, unwind and use the objects the player has placed. A camera mode with filters, framing and focus closes the loop. Where Hokko Life measured progress in a growing town, Spaces measures it in a snapshot: the reward for building something is watching someone enjoy it, then keeping the frame.

It is a modest bet, and a telling one for Team17. Hokko Life entered Early Access on Steam in June 2021 and reached its full release in September 2022 on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Hokko Spaces arrives on October 29, 2026, on PC through Steam and on Nintendo Switch, just as the autumn its announcement leans into settles in.
For a genre that has spent years promising rest and delivering errands, a game that offers only the rest is not a small idea. It is the cosy game with its scaffolding removed.
