For the most part, no two video games are the same. One just has to look at a digital distribution platform like Steam for proof. On the one hand, there are games like Skyrim, one of the biggest, most grand role-playing titles of the twenty-first century. On the other hand, there is Stardew Valley, a much simpler romp that has only marginal RPG elements.

Skyrim and Stardew Valley may directly contrast with one another, but there is a game that seeks to combine the best of both worlds. That game is Runic Winds, a new title GeccoBot that combines the open-world elements of Skyrim with the cozy world building of Stardew Valley, and is completely free on Steam.

Runic Winds Is Somehow Gritty and Cozy at the Same Time

It was a tall order to make a game that could effectively incorporate elements from the gritty Skyrim, which still manages to hold up after over fifteen years, and the cozy Stardew Valley, with its fascinating and memorable characters. However, Runic Winds manages to pull it off, even including a whole plot for players to try and follow.

Runic Winds’ main protagonist is Maria, a woman with amnesia who has to slowly piece together thoughts from her past. She has awoken in a seemingly peaceful and tranquil Skyrim-esque world that is nonetheless largely overrun by enemies for her to try and fight against. The good news is that there is more than a substantial number of friendly Stardew Valley-style NPCS to help her along the way.

Runic Winds has players scavenge any materials they can find and use them to craft items like weapons. After that, players can learn to master these weapons, all of which have specialized uses that are either effective against enemies or inanimate obstacles that stand in their way.

In addition, Runic Winds has an intricate magic system. Here, players can learn new spells that come in handy during battles. However, battles aren’t the only areas where these spells are useful. As with the weapons, these magic spells can also be used to remove obstacles and solve puzzles.

The biggest draw of Runic Winds is its open world; it may not be quite as open as Skyrim, but it’s an impressive effort nonetheless. There are many secrets for players to try and find, and many fun NPCs to meet.

Runic Winds Is Still in Development

The demo for Runic Winds was first released on January 30, 2026, via Steam. For what it’s worth, the demo does a solid job of showing what the game is all about, and how well it incorporates elements of both Skyrim and Stardew Valley. Sadly, it appears it will be a little while before the full game comes out.

The reason for this has to do with the game’s limited crew; it’s just GeccoBot. Runic Winds is the indie developer’s first effort, and unlike most indie games of its caliber, it appears to have had no crowdfunding behind it. GeccoBot has been developing Runic Winds over the last few years, and has described the game as more of a Zelda-inspired Soulslike game.

The game’s latest update came out on May 21, 2026, with GeccoBot stating they are presently focusing on their studies at college, from which they will graduate in December. At the same time, they are continuing piecemeal work on Runic Winds, with construction on one of the game’s dungeons, Deepwood Shrine, well underway. They are also adding more puzzles and additional elements to make the game’s world more lively.

Effectively, this means Runic Winds will likely see a full release by 2027 at the earliest. In the meantime, the game’s demo is more than enough to give one an idea of what it will be all about. The game’s exact system requirements, other than needing Windows 10, are not known, nor whether the game will be Steam Deck compatible. Runic Winds does, however, support Xbox and PlayStation controllers.

There is a lot to think about in the days leading up to Runic Winds’ full-fledged release. It will certainly give gamers more time to consider what enemies and NPCs will be added to help players immerse themselves in the game’s world.
