A lot of people seem to think that Minecraft is easier than Terraria but as someone who has played Terraria for many years and only recently got into Minecraft I found this rather perplexing. So lets see if we can figure out why people think Minecraft I easier and see if it really is.

I think a way to put it would be.
Terraria is a leagues more complex game, with many more mechanics intertwined with new items every few minutes. There's an immense learning curve you can't cover until several playthroughs in, which certainly isn't helped by the fact the game barely teaches you anything.
Minecraft on the other hand, while mechanically leagues more simple, and requiring a lot less knowledge to progress. However, minecraft is also a considerably more punishing game. The loss of all your items on death in some place you don't remember how to get to is terrifying to me.
So it's really just different kinds of difficulty.
Punishing gameplay or An overload of information.
And to go a bit off topic, i think terraria is leagues more engaging, for the sole purpose of having clear goals that you can tackle. Always something to do.
In minecraft there's very few progression goals that you don't have to set for yourself, so it really becomes "Here's everything at your disposal, do what you want". Which works for some people without a doubt, but not for me, hence why i have struggled to enjoy minecraft for almost a decade now.
I remember playing terraria all the way back in 2012 on my Xbox 360. For some reason my brother bought it as a gift, he didn't knew anything about that game.
Anyway, I remember getting into it in the tutorial world, I was stuck there for a solid 2 hours, once I jumped into a normal world… I was lost, the only goal I had was build houses for npc and exploring.
I finished the world only by relying on the guide, and only for recipes. Never knew bosses could spawn naturally, heck I didn't saw meteorite in that playthrough because I wasn't aware of shadow orbs.
And I think that's the magic of terraria, even now after 10 years of playing I still find things I wasn't aware of.
How does the video have 6k likes and 700 views?
another banger, keep up the great work!
The game gives you everything you need to beat it without using the wiki, using the guide really helps a lot actually. You just need to go exploring and interacting with anything that looks interesting which is what most people do anyways, there is a learning curve to the game though.
A great analysis! I think both Minecraft and Terraria have a certain degree of unapproachability for people who are entirely unfamiliar with them. I remember waaaaay back in the day someone making a very basic "here's what you do when first starting in Minecraft! Punch a tree! Make a place to hide!" guide to entice their friends to start in with it…. and god knows that I needed a friend to do a bit of the same for me to get me into Terraria. Terraria has the added complication of… being just plain complicated! What are all these things to craft??? What do I do with all this stuff??? What is even the goal???
Thing is once you figure these games out, all that complexity is ENTICING, not repelling. I think it's that Terraria's complexity is even MORE complex and overwhelming, and it takes a particular sort of gamer to really really click with it. Meanwhile Minecraft, you can just bum around and do whatever much more easily.
I started playing terraria on 2020 I tried to play it before but it didn't catch my attention, Minecraft was a big and vast world and terraria was tiny, claustrophobic even and I didn't knew what to do, it was not a "what's next?" It was a "now what?" Then I played it with a game that taught me the how to play, what to do and I had fun, it was still small and dying so much was really annoying since I never was a good player in most games, then I started to play more and even made resource packs, for me the end game is bad because I can see the whole map explored and it still feels like a shoe box witch little change between playthrougs but is fun, now I'm modding starbound to play it with a friend
Minecraft was way more simple back in the day. You probably got bored after 5 minutes because you didnt see wood and think "I could make such a cool house with that". Also you describing making tools as a grind is very funny since im playing a Greg Tech based modpack rn. All the greggers will understand.
Terraria actually was too hard for me when I first played it back when it launched. The jump from my starting capabilities to being able to kill Eye of Cthulhu felt super dramatic to me. There weren't all these guides and whatnot online telling me what I need, this was the wild west where I kind of felt I had to figure it out on my own. And I simply was NOT used to the sort of things Terraria ultimately asks of players. 'Build an arena'? A totally alien concept to me, and one that most Terraria players nowadays probably take for granted. No other games asks that of you. So you might not think of that on your own unless you're very smart(I'm not). Or the requirement of equipment and things like Hermes boots and all. The whole notion of 'explore and scavenge until you have the right kind of equipment' was similarly alien to me. I was used to games having very clear progression paths I could follow rather than having to seek stuff out on my own and 'figure it out'.
I grew up playing Minecraft and relatively quickly picked up Terraria too. I know exactly why I didn't bounce off of Terraria. Modded minecraft. I always preferred Modded to the base version, and there are no acurate wikis for almost anything, Youtube tutorials or trial and error are the things you need to do to learn. Nowadays most mods have in-game documentation in minecraft, but that used to be excitingly rare. I was used to not knowing what is going on and still am when i pick up a new game. i rarely abandon games before i at least understand the basics, exeptions are games that are obviously poorly made, or i REALLY dislike the gameplay i have experienced.
i got to grow up with both so i’d say i’m the luckiest one
"Creepers are bad game design" – if you dont play on a server, you can use a bed to get back to daytime right away, taking away any creeper threat from your building process(unless you're building underground). And as for Minecraft requiring a Wiki to understand everything – yea, it's true, but unlike Terraria, there's no real pressing need to progress. You can just hang out and BS and have fun at your own pace. Terraria, on the other hand, gets dull if you aren't chasing the progression path at least somewhat. The whole 'building' aspect is not quite as appealing as in Minecraft.
I grew up playing terraria too, I remember not knowing wha to do back then I alreafy have max pre hardmode gear, and I didnt do wall of flesh because I didnt now it existed lmao. Man 1.2 days
Another factor you could consider is that Minecraft is in 3d while Terraria is in 2D. My brother's wife only ever plays with him 2d games Like New Super Mario and Super Smash Brothers and she is comfortable with it. But when she tries out 3D games, she gets very confused and has a hard time to handle games in 3D. Many people would rather play with 2D because its less stressful to people than with 3D where you have to worry about your entire surrounding. Hence why some people prefer 2D mario while others prefer 3d mario. Using that as an example
This whole video reminds me of my first playthrough with my brothers. And you talk about finding there are bosses by them spawning naturally. And that's how I found out skeletron exist. I just found a building and an NPC interacted with it and it said to come back at night. So I got interested and that's my favorite memory playing terraria.
I grew up with both terraria and minecraft. And I still prefer terraria cuz its got a lot more that I like over minecraft.
I wouldn't call it easier, probably simpler. Or maybe less cluttered. For the most part Minecraft is basically a game of building things with blocks you get, while Terraria functions both as a sandbox builder and an RPG, so you have a lot of extra things added onto it. If minecraft had a whole tech progressions with a dozen unique enchanted weapons, armors, and special consumable battle buffs I think it'd probably be a bit more off putting due to the perceived added complexity to the game even if the core game play loop of "Find material; build cool house with it" remained the same.
I would say Minecraft is more fun when started i mean you just spawn in and you dont know anything about the game and you trying to survive your first night but as you get to know about the game more it's just didn't feel like hard anymore its boring now when you think about it because you just gonna end up doing nothing and has nothing new to play with but terraria when you started it is kinda boring like you spawn in and immediately got some rough time dealing with slime while trying to figure what to do in the game so you gonna just kept dying and dying and till you get borad of it but when you get to know the game more you actually have many challenges to face even if you beat the game like sub-class
Secret seed and even mod i mean Minecraft do have some mod too but it's just hard for mobile player to play there are not that many good mod on Minecraft pe but terraria mobile also dont have mode but it still have all the class and secret seed and alot of weapon for you to play with it's still fun if you beat this game like a million time you still haven't explored all the stuff in terraria but Minecraft it's just dont have the same vibe for you to play it a very very long time that's all i think about it
I played both for quite a while. minecraft was my first game and for a pretty long literally the only game I had apart from some Nintendo stuff. so I played a LOT of minecraft back then. like during 1.8 – 1.12 maybe. and like a year ago or so a streamer in whos community I was very active started a server for his VIPs and I played a LOT on that server as well. then I lost my perfectly enchanted netherite stuff which took ages to get and practically havent touched minecraft a single time since then.
Terraria on the other hand I got when 1.4 released, did my first playthrough on master mode soaked up every single guide video in existance and downloaded like half the wiki into my brain. modded and vanilla terraria combined I have over 1000 hours now and I always take a sizable break from the game after every playthrough to play or do some other stuff. but I always find myself coming back for the next big adventure. next up on the list is mod of redemtion or the stars above.
with minecraft I dont feel like thats possible. I'm not much of a builder at all so what replayability does minecraft have for me? none really. and I dont like the new minecraft updates either. and on top of that every new minecraft update makes the game run worse and worse.
minecraft is just kinda boring
Honestly while terraria is likely harder to get into without prior context on what you need to do and can feel overwhelming, when you do learn more about it it's personally a lot more fun and chill. One huge problem in minecraft is that progress is slow and with a smaller scale plus death is very punishing. You can recover items but it's frustrating that items despawn this quickly and they can easily be destroyed in lava
Not to mention that the game still feels pretty empty to me: like you said it can get pretty boring. Terraria has so much more content and possibilites to make your playthrough more exciting. It's also funny that people complain about terraria being grindy when minecraft forces you to endlessly explore the caverns and your movement options are very limited. In terms of building minecraft might be more open due to its 3d nature but making new structures in terraria is a lot more convenient plus the slopes, furniture and paint gives it much more variety
I recently started a fresh playthrough on a pc after years of playing on console and defeated moon lord after 100 hours of playing. It's too much you say for a single playthrough you say? Well, I did all the side content and took my time building and improving my gear without much rush and I had a blast. I don't have any problems with the game's structure. The only achievement I'm missing is the one for 200 quests and I'm getting close to it
As someone who started with minecraft and sucked at it and started playing terraria after a friend told me about it and I struggled with it too but I never wanted to stop trying. I am not going to get bored of terraria for a long time, especially with 1.4.5 coming somewhat soon and I will always hold it close to my heart ❤
i can beat terraria but i can never beat minecraft even know terraria is harder
Terraria is too… fun.
I played both, minecraft was mostly for the time when I didn't feel like playing any video game
Yes and no, with the same way both games doesn't have proper tutorial (ignoring teraria's tutorial world). It's just time. I say both players of each game would just mess around and figure out how to play. It's not "hard" it's fun imo.
I grew up with both games and honestly didn't really connect the two, at least not until I heard everybody else do the connection.
The only reason why I stuck with Minecraft and not terraria, was because my world (on the ps3) got corrupted. When I logged in and went into the underground the game just froze. I just recently rediscovered the game and was very happy when I did. I watched a lot of videos before I played so I got back into it really fast and even played through the whole game for the first time.
Honestly I can't really see the connection between these games other then the building and pixel graphic style.
Amazing video btw 😀
I’ve never fully played through Terria. It’s just to confusing for me, and like you the wiki I don’t go, I feel like Terria should make it more clear what you can do next because I don’t know what to do.
thing is, you don't have to understand Minecraft (look at the wiki, watch content) to enjoy it. I have a friend who has no clue on how to get to the nether, and yet he enjoyed Minecraft for years growing up. many play creative, or just build/explore without caring about the dragon. Minecraft stripped of it's progression is still Minecraft
Minecraft is an "easier game" in that you don't have to know what you're doing to have fun
I enjoy Terraria more, but it's no surprise to me that Minecraft is far more popular. the "target audience" for the game is incredibly broad – it's almost frightening
I've been playing Minecraft for the longest time, and here are my thoughts
I personally get bored if I play alone, but when I play with friends its the most fun. I only like the building and cave exploration but it's lackluster. I would say they are equally hard but once you know how to craft the basics then you know how to craft most items. There's also no progression, like there's no incentive to go for it. All you get is an elytra or shulker boxes which I can live without. I enjoy more of the building aspect here but the progrees is so boring
I recently played terraria for the first time a few months ago and well heres what I think again:
The solo and multiplayer experience is so fun, but the grind is also annoying. There's so much progress to go for but there's so much of looking up the wiki and know where to get it and when to get it. Theres so many mechanics too that I keep finding it. Overall, I personally enjoy more than MC
I started Terraria at 10. I had played a little bit of Minecraft before that, but only creative building. I remember being so hopeless at the game. Then, I realized I had to learn how the game worked. So I literally went on the wiki and read every single page. Then I watched numerous videos.
It helped.
And even now I still have trouble beating master mode in under 300 deaths. On the other hand, I know pretty much everything there is to know about the game.
I remember when I started to playing terraria for the first time, I got bodied and camped by a pinky in the first 10 minute lol
I think Terraria is harder which is weird considering when I started playing it as a Kid I was way better at it than Minecraft and never needed the wiki
I play both and i believe that Minecraft is more popular simply because it's 3D, and in 3D games there is more room for expression in building and in moving around.
It would make more sense that people are more drawn to the 3D game, because obviously we aren't paper thin humans we live in a 3D world, so i believe that there is a sense of familiarity.
That being said i think that Minecraft is a heavily flawed game, with a great concept.
And is why i will always prefer Terraria over it.
most children watch trash unlike this video instead of playing terraria and wiki searching
i grew up playing both and i can honestly say imo i think its just a difference in playstyles and its as simple as that, terraria is more complex and requires a playstyle of being willing to put in time to learn and research, and put in countless tries until you achieve your goal, where as in minecraft its simpler, theres not a direct progression arc and the game is generally a sandbox where you mostly just get basic gear and proceed to build and fight a ender dragon boss that his little to no difficulty, theres not alot you NEED to learn and the game is very simple for the casual gamer who doesnt wish to learn and research and be put in a situation where you NEED to die to progress and achieve the goal, the same can be said with starbound, its generally a entirely different game than terarria, its giving you a direct story arc and progression in your face, its simple like minecraft in a pre tense of you have a direct goal thats simple and easy to achieve and you dont need to research and put in alot of time to understand and progress. it has more items and a more complex system than minecraft yes but generally its very informative on its own on how to do all these things. terraria is not and requires you to research on your own to understand, and give in countless tries of dying and finding out progression on your own or through a wiki
Throarbob i have listened but anyways my friends are beind drop into terraria's calamity on revengeance for there first playthrough with me and i will drag them to victory agains scal
I also find minecraft extremely boring compared to terraria
Minecraft is worse
look in my strong opinion Minecraft is a just OK game nothing more nothing less,
but if it had more bosses like terraria and more like actual progression like terraria, then I probably wouldn’t have uninstalled it the first few hours of playing it just for extra storage 💀💀💀
