I've always used meteor bullets.
My trick is finding big big holes on the ground. They're not always lakes

My favourite trick is using the musket in meteorite bullets with the musket in 1.2
I used the water bolt method back on the ps3

i haven't played terraria since2016 and this is how i found out you dont just have to find the tallest point of your world then build up and out until you get struck by a feather

Me who accidentally stumbled upon one:
you can also use a golf ball and tee as well as a wedge club from the golfer npc because the camera follows the ball and wedge flings stuff super high up
I had a really good world that had a floating island very close to spawn but sadly I lost it
Here is another one (if you see a little bit of ore in the ground mine down on it it's 90% chance to be a BIG thing of ore
