heres my theory: a species of titanic kraken like sea-dwelling creature that eats snow to compensate the lack of proper internal cooling system was once a popular test subject for an anciant race of "minecraftians", though, in their expedition to the nether, they decided to use pigs and these krakens as test subjects, millions of years later, while the over world pigs got smaller, with no tusks, the netherian variants adapted into two main species: the piglins who gained more inteligence and as a side effect a bit of greed and the hoglins, just bigger, wilder pigs meanwhile the krakens? while their overworld counterparts got smaller, dumber and harmless, aswell as blue to desguise themselves in the water and a ink spray for defense, even sometimes evolving a glow to see in the dark, aswell as an actual internal cooling system, they are now known as the "squid" the netherian counterpart gained the ability to fly as to avoid the burning ground and boiling hot lava, they close their gills to avoid inhaling the gases and burning their lungs, they now shoot fireballs for extra protection against the nether creatures, their tears now have a boiling point of over 100.000°F as well as a regenerative property to keep themselves and their children from drying out and shriveling (which doesnt stop when they perish and their children are left to rot in the fossilized skeleton of their mom) these poor souls are now forever known as the "ghasts" though… if only these dried ghasts where taken to the overworld, hidrated and fed snowballs for cooling, raised with their gills open and breathing fresh air, with no reason to fire fireballs and no reason to cry anymore, maybe it could feel happiness once more? maybe even bring this horrible species composed of sheer sadness, blind rage and scalding hot natural enviroments definetly unfitting for all life to a happier existance?
Im pretty sure the ghasts are meant to be aquatic creatures that were capable of flight, they also share similarities in appearance to a squid being a cephalopod
My personal thought is just that ghasts are like, combo of guardian and squid? They’re just really big squids with fish like adaptations like gills. Hot air in the nether is what causes them to balloon and float
