How Noob Friendly is Terraria?
Terraria is a great game, one of the best ever if you ask me, but how well does Terraria’s game design teach new players?

If you're looking for the new video on how the Guide makes or breaks Terraria, it will be released next week. It was a fascinating dive but in the meantime the video at the end will lead you a video about that first noob I mentioned in the beginning. He played the game entirely differently and had some very similar and very different problems.
I’ve spent over 300 hours in terraria. I wouldn’t consider myself a noob exactly. But that hammer in the crafting UI is news to me. Thank you for teaching me a new trick lmao.
5:20 gojo vs sukuna Ahh battle
This is actually quite good content that would likely be helpful to game developers
19:40 so I've been a casual terraria player for a while now and uh, I had no idea that hammer did something because I assumed it was just a menu decoration 😅
When I first played terraria, I tried to break a crimson altar, so I tried to get a better hammer so I could break it
Ooooook, hope this turns into a journey to moonlord series, this was great!
Travis is a cutie patooty
My first exposure to Terraria was from watching my friend played it when I was at his house. He was already in hardmode and using chain gun and chlorophyte bullets, and doing all those flashy attacks. I thought it was interesting, then he left his room to do something and well, I was curious about the game so I played it as he left the game open (he didn't mind this just to say, we were best buddies). He left his character inside his base in snow biome. I was looking for an exit which I couldn't find, so I ended up digging a hole out of it and then replaced the blocks that I mined. When he came back he was confused how did I get out of this base. Turned out there's a switch to turn on actuators and that's how you're supposed to exit the base, which I a complete noob wouldn't have known but I was still able to get out
Not noob friendly at all lol.
Im gonna use this video series and try to create a mod that fixes all the issues with new players.
One thing i know for a fact i wanna do is update some tooltips to be a little more informative and make the guide invincible in pre hardmode (aside from when you have the doll equipped, throw the doll in lava, or damage the guide himself with lava)
When I first played terraria it was on mobile and I remember there being a tutorial world that explained the basics up to suitable housing, I wish they still had that tutorial available because without it the game is so hard to get in to
If it wasn't for the fact I've played this game since it came out and the fact I'm aware of the various "Step by step from start to finish guides" there are. If I was a brand new player, I''d install the game, dick around for an hour and probably stop playing due to how confusing and complex it is.
I first started playing terraria 12 years ago after watching Stampy play it for the first time 😋
17:51 I only learned how saplings work there after reading the wiki, had near 500 hours in game by that time probably, was just planting them randomly before that
My man the background music was too loud, almost unwatchable due to that :/
What is with all your friends leaving stumps? I don't know any game that you want to do that.
Day 2 of asking play worldbox👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾
I remember when I was on a call with my friend while he was playing terraria for the first time. His first words were “oh my god this game is gory” after he killed a bunny and that has stuck with me forever
Not at all. You need the wiki to know where to go and what to do.
I had just got done watching your survival videos, when will your next challenge video, i also have a request for your next challenge video, there is this one youtuber who got me into the game in the first place…pythongb, i was wondering if you could invite him for your next challenge video, i know this may be alot to ask for but i wanted to ask just in case it was possible, keep up the good work on the great videos
The thing that frustrates me with playing with new players is they don’t read.. anything? Like they’ll throw away important things because they don’t LOOK important
Ive been planning on showing a few of my friends this game but me and my one buddy agreed it be better to wait till 1.4.5, ive been playing since 1.2 i dont remember if i started on Phone or DS, but my first playthrough was interesting didnt know the kid who didnt have access to Youtube or the wiki would now have 2000+ hours. Interesting how things like these become your favorite games
anybody remember the demo of terraria when the game was first released, that shit taught you EVERYTHING you needed to know to play. there was next to no content but there was alot in there to "start" playing. Not sure if that was the demo or a tutorial but man I remember the days when I didn't know how to build a house and had to keep asking the guide what to do
"Push buttons until something happens" is actually phenomenal advice for learning technology, especially digital technology where you often have tooltips to help explain things.
The amount of times I've seen people who can't learn anything because they're just terrified of pushing ANY buttons they don't understand is painful.
Speaking of Travis’ assumption about trees needing water and light to grow because he saw one tree coincidentally grow by a torch, that is a psychological phenomenon called operant conditioning! A scientist named Skinner did an experiment with pigeons where he put them in individual cages with a timer-based food dispenser. Every five minutes, the food would dispense without any kind of cue other than time passing (ex: sound, light). Skinner observed that when the first food was dispensed, most of the birds tried to repeat the behavior they had been engaged in at the time of the dispensing (ex: if a bird coincidentally jumped at the same time the food would dispense, it would try jumping again to get food because it correlated the two behaviors, even though they were completely independent of one another). Interesting stuff!
16:35 these are no problems throarbin, this is called exploring.
Really happy you're trying this again with a "dont play offscreen" rule, thank you!
Travis truly is a star
19:39 personaly when i was playing terraria i noticed something was up but that was mostly because i played earlier on mobile and i remember it had like the big ui on the screen for crafting so i tried searching it on a pc after i got it there
I watched a streamer on twitch play terraria for the first time, completely blind. He played on master mode hardcore, had over 100 deaths and discovered the wall of flesh but never managed to actualy beat it until he gave up. He found the achievements in the game to lead him where to go next, and it’s how he discovered how to summon the wall of flesh too.
