How Does a Noob Handle Terraria’s Caves?
Terraria is one of the top games ever. But let’s take a look at its game design and see if we can figure out why. Can a total noob learn the game without any help from the wiki?

I was playing with a friend awhile back and we were exploring caves (I'm a newer player) and I saw the glowing biome and was immediately drawn
I hope you keep doing this series even in to the point of late hardmode because the reason I'm watching is to see the noob defeating the moon lord (mainly all the stuff to that point).
Moar🖤
Thx for uploaf
nope…. i avoided glowing mushroom biom for a long time. It seemed scary and high level location
I absolutely love these videos. As someone with a game design background and tons of friends who play games, I take for granted so many things that are basically a second language of gaming.
And seeing a totally fresh take on one of my favorite all time games is making me think about it differently!
I was conpelled to explore glowing fungus.
I propose a Guide Named Travis, after he finishes a full playthrough. XD
6:56 This has probably been said, but Ice Bats give off a slight glow! It's quite hard to see, and obviously only applies to ice caves, but it does help.
I realized something myself a short while ago while playing.(Tried not using the wiki)
The guide is nice in helping with showing you what you can craft with an item you found. But he wont tell you what you need to craft one of the items combined with the item you found.(at least not as far as i know)
Simple example.
Give the quide a gold bar.
He will show you as one of the options a pocket watch.
but to craft it you would still need a chain what do i need to craft a chain?(Seeing as lead and iron are the same thing maybe on an iron world this is less of a problem but this is just an example.)
Now imagine more complex recipes like the shellphone, ank shield or terra boots.
please make more of these i love this kind of stuff
terraria is still alive 😀
10:21 I am currently playing Pikmin 4 for the first time and now that you said this I am realising that I still never used the spicy spray even though I am almost at the end of the game…
See, I was introducing Terraria to a friend who didn't know it (very well) quite some time back
and we came to an interesting conclusion I think I left as a comment on that video.
Terraria isn't "2D Minecraft." It's a Sandbox Metroidvania. If you look at it through that lens it changes EVERYTHING about how you interpret the game, and when you consider its progression strategy it makes a million times more sense to look at it that way.
i swear travis has a hint of homer simpson's voice and mannerisms
When I first played Terraria I went right for the Mushroom biome as soon I saw it.
However!
My first playthrough was with a friend, and it happened to be a crimson world just after the crimson was added.
Just to the right of where we started was a shallow, but unusually large lake. only 2-3 blocks deep, but it stretched off the side of the screen.
I told my friend I was going to explore in that direction and they told me to go ahead while he built the house…
I got about halfway across the lake and
"Hey… the water in the lake just turned into blood…"
"It's probably fine! Go ahead, you're just next to spawn."
I took a few more steps and the trees in the background turned into ribs and eyeballs.
"Oh… nooope!"
I turned and started trying to flee but just then a Crimera came flying onto the screen.
"Monster! biiig monster!"
I somehow help it off with my beginned short sword long enough to make it back across the lake with just a sliver of health.
"Oh god! What the hell is that?!" exclaimed my friend as he saw the crimera chasing me just as he finished putting the roof on his starter box.
I ran inside, he sealed the door and spent the next few minutes stabbing it and being amazed at how much health it had (I later learned friend had started us on "expert")
A few mintes later he went to investigate the lake himself and had a similar experience with a face monster. We then built a VERY large wall on our side of the lake.
But aside from a funny story, my point was that if a new biome stands out enough, it can seem threatening people might just not want to deal with it.
Maybe the reason I was happy to check out the glowing blue area was because it seemed tame compared to the bloody eyeball monster lake.
On my first play through I struggled a lot on caves, I had a bad time underground so I gave up on exploring the underground and tried to brute force my way through the surface, I suffered a lot that I left the game for like 3 years.
I did run straight towards the mushroom biome when i first started, abut that's because I vaguely knew they were better than where I was.
Pretty sure that while I poked into the Glowing Mushroom Biome as a noob I quicky learned to avoid it as the first time I found one I wasn't nearly strong enough to deal with the enemies in them.
I remember my first playthrough, I started to go down, encountered a worm while digging, died, and never went down again
This series is hitting the algorithm well, and for good reason it’s a fun series:). Highly recommend numbering the episodes or throwing them into a playlist for people to follow it!
The way I discovered Terraria was by mistaking it with Starbound. I wanted to get Starbound because I saw a youtuber I watched play it and the game instantly captured me. The only modern console I had (it was around 2016) was the PS4.
Me and my brother, both blind to the game, were hooked in to plsy Terraria, the first time we found the Underworld was by following a very, very thin tunnel in the Tundra caves. It was around Halloween, so we had costumes. My brother wore a witch costume, I had the creeper costume. I will never forget the first playthrough I had.
The 1.2 feature I miss the most is not Okram, but the enemy pings when opening the map.
A few years later, around 2020~2021 I finally played Starbound. While it was an amazing game, Terraria, with its continous updates, for sure casted a shadow over it. Nowadays, both of those games are one of my most favorite games in the 2D survival game genre.
14:22 I do that sometimes too in all kinds of games, incl. Terraria.
Not sure about Travis but in this case my logic would be that the Mushroom biome is an obvious "landmark" and a way to go, which means there's no way I'd get distracted and forget about it, and so I'll horizontally explore the more "boring" and "casual" surrounding first just to "get it out of the way" and light it up with torches so I can fully focus on the Mushroom biome (especially if I wouldn't know the size and what's inside).
Because if I would go straight for the Mushroom biome (and survive) I'd wanna explore caves on those deeper levels rather than those above because I'd assume that deeper = harder but with better loot and ores.
I am so invested in this series, very refreshing
As a game dev, its pretty funny to watch him basically go through the playtesting experience.
my first time playing these type of games in am scared shitless of everything. Glowing mushrooms do not look friendly.
i was not compelled i just dug untill i hit a cave then dug sown after exploring i eventualy got to it and did what i usaly do explored not realy compled just accident
I think I have the answer to your glowing mushroom problem. I've played terraria for years now, more than a decade. I was originally drawn into the first mushroom biome I saw and was swiftly punished by this logic in other games over the years. So many deaths in so many games because glowing meant tough not come take a look.
What a great series!
3:46 learning is connecting the unknown to the known Minecraft is probably just the closest nearly universal comparison
I'm glad we didn't see the same thing that happened to me the first time I found a fairy in Terraria. ..It was also the first time I found a trapped chest.
This is a super neat series and I'm glad I happened across it and the channel. It's always nice to see the Guide get judged fairly, it's always a nice change of pace.
I've been waiting for another one of these. I wish you guys played more often.
These experiments from you are super interesting, and I'd like to bring up what I think is super important when it comes to learning Terraria (by comparing it to Minecraft (wow!)).
So similarly with Minecraft, I believe Terraria is meant to be a shared experience. You can theoretically figure out everything on your own, and both games have gotten much better at that with time, but there will always be small things that are quite difficult to discover that way. I believe the developer intention is to find something, gain a baseline knowledge on it on your own, and then learn more about it from others! I have a feeling the majority of us learned most of the details and progression from others back when we started. Of course, some people prefer their games to have everyone explained well, with no need to look things up or ask for help, but I believe the shared experience is what makes sandbox games like this so great.
(This isn't to suggest that having someone learn without help is "wrong". I think this plays into the whole sandbox thing, you really can learn in many ways!)
Also side note: Your friend is so whimsical and fun discovering stuff in this game, they sound so genuinely interested and invested and seem like they're having a great time.
After this you should see if he can do calamity
Eggs are just a chicken's Nut. When you eat eggs, you're eating chicken nut.
14:54 I was compelled to explore glowing mushroom
On my first play through I found 2 gold chests and three life crystals there which taught me they were a good place to be. This built my affinity for it and helped me late game for making stronger potions
my theory on why players may avoid the mushroom biome is the fear of it being a stronger area much like the corruption or crimson are. One is bright red and the other is a dark purple both of which being very unnaturally vibrant colors that happen to be areas of the game that are harder for a new player to navigate so seeing another unnaturally bright and vibrant biome underground may lead them into believing that it too is a very difficult biome and because its underground it might be even harder than the ones on the surface and thus arent ready for it yet
When your friend finishes the playthrough, it would be nice to see him play Terraria Overhaul on 1.3.
My friend and I used to build entire sewer networks to keep water from drowning the house)))
Maybe also his reaction to the split mod, it's one of the best modifications and it's barely getting any media attention (maybe because there hasn't been an update in over two years, but the guys are still sweating over the port to 1.4.5)
Sorry but mushrooms imply poison, games like Hollow Knight have me avoid that kinda thing until I think I've found a way to handle them
I tried exploring the mushroom biome very very carefully since I thought it would be very dangerous.
I have not played Terraria for 5 years, but you have inspired me to play again! Thanks so much for such good content! I especially liked the Survivor video btw
