Is Ranger the Most Boring Class in Terraria? #terraria

What’s the most boring class in Terraria? Every class has their ups and downs, but in terms of straightup gameplay, I think that ranger is the worst. The class is fine, but it doesn’t have very unique gameplay at all. Bows, guns, and rocket launchers are pretty much all you get, and they all feel very similar to one another. You have arrows, bullets, and rockets as your ammunition with very few exceptions. Compared to every other class, this feels stale. The melee class has a bunch of different weapon types like flails, boomerangs, yo-yos, and more. Mage has a unique energy mechanic, and nearly every weapon there has a unique projectile. Summoner has a wide variety of different minions and deeper mechanics like whip stacking. And then ranged is kind of just there. It’s a great class if you want pure damage, but in terms of gameplay, it’s not the most interesting.

Is Ranger the most boring class in Terraria? Let’s talk about it.

  1. As a summoner main I think that it’s second most boring as it’s all dodging as for whip stacking im bad so I can’t do it and I need to get kinda close and we get like -4 defense

  2. Its my go to class if im doing a build focused world just because its efficient, and imo its between ranger and melee for best class in terms of ease of use relative to its efficiency, but its is definitely a pretty stale class. High damage, solid defense and good range, but it lacks the special effects that give the other classes oomf. I think if more weapons gave the impression of power the way melee, mage and summoner do, as well as have more special effects, itd feel less boring. Modded ranger feels great because the weapons have more to them than just shooting whatever ammo you have at the rate, spread and damage the weapon itself has, they add in more supplementary effects to the weapons like extra missiles, a special dot effect, fancy firing patterns, visually stunning special ammo, great hit feedback in form of screenshake, sound or impact. The eventide, vortex beater, onyx blaster and arieal bane are good example of design choices that make ranger feel more satisfying/cool to see, which makes it feel more fun when using them. For prehm, going all out on effects isnt quite the move, but I feel that making weapons fire very distinctly is what makes them fun. I despise crimson ranger just because the undertaker feels very middling. The heavy hits and higher crit change of the musket makes it more satisfying, and contrasting with the minishark which does far less damage per hit but can mow down lines of enemies with its fast firerate, that vastly different feel makes it satisfying. Stuff like tge flinlock, revolver, undertaker, handgun, and even phoenix blaster just arent quite as satisfying as fully leaning in one way or the other.

  3. Melee is for people who dont like using their brain
Ranged is for people who like to rush through the game without actually having fun
Mage is for people who like spending 18 hours to get some tiny upgrade
And summoner is (or was) for lazy people

  4. I wish ranger had a couple things.

    1. More accessories, melee gets a big long crafting tree for gloves, mage gets a bunch of accessories, summoner also needs help and ranger gets quivers and a scope and that’s it. Both hardmode and you can either be less noticeable or just have wooden arrows shoot fire, which is useless endgame.

    2. More unique bows/guns/launchers that get good damage but also shoot unique things. Even if it’s using wooden/basic ammo to get something cooler, like the Bee’s Knees, there needs to be more.

    3. Ammo cycling. Either an easier way to change the type of ammo mid combat or have programmable ammo. Ex you’re fighting Skeletron Prime with the Megashark, you could switch from Ichor and crystal so like you shoot ichor 5 times and then crystal bullets 20 times and it just flip flops.

  5. "You got a different variety of minions"
Alright? You got a different variety of guns, bows and launchers? You got an even WIDER variety of bullets, arrows and rockets? You tryna start beef with ranger or sm?

  6. The verity isn't the weapon. it's the ammunition, some perice, some hom in, and other apply debuffs. Also, every range weapon type has at least 1 (like 4 or 5 with bows and guns) that change up the way the projectile is shot. Just because you dont like doesn't mean there's less verity.

  7. I definitely feel like it's the least exciting.
It doesn't have anything that stands out and less variety when it comes to how you attack the enemy. And before ANYONE comes at me with their 'there are so many different bullets and arrows tho!1!1!1!' — that's not variety.

To me, variety is something that allows me to still play that class, just differently. Example would be mage, how you can go from something like the Last Prism, where aiming is important, to thr Razorblade Typhoon, where you can just spam wherever and the attack will automatically target the enemy closest to it.

Yes, ranger also has that with things like chlorophyte bullets also auto targeting or some other kind of bullets that would apply debuffs — but ultimately, to me that doesn't spell variety.

The only rhing I do appreciate is the Dart Guns and their mechanics, since those do change up the gameplay quite a bit, depending on what darts you use.

  8. Yeah ranger is probably the best class in the game it has good weapons, armour, and easy to use but that also just make it boring because every is just the same

  9. I must disagree, you don't need spectacular animations and variety to have fun in a game, give me the clockwork assault rifle (needs a buff) or the shark gun and I'm happy all the way up to Moon Lord, ranger will always be my favorite class
