If you’re using commands then you can spawn yourself a couple light blocks. Invisible but gives light.
1000% the way to go imo! The way you describe it fixing the lighting issue and it also adding the right texture is a perfect win-win.

Maybe for even more pattern you could try the red/black glazed terracotta. It might be to much, but maybe worth a try.
