Checking the trash cans is great, but the recycling machine doesn't give anything that can't be gotten anywhere else more efficiently and is often not even worth my time when i can just put the trash that i fished up instead where it belongs: In the trash can.
Once I upgrade the pickaxe and axe a good enough amount, I always upgrade the trash can asap. My inventory is often a mess and I wanna get the best couple coins from it as possible. ALSO the trash can near Gus often gives one of the recent specials, Evelyn’s often gives cookies, and all the trash cans (I think) can give things from different seasons! So if you forgot to grab a specific fish for one of the bundles or something, dumpster diving is a good thing to add to your to do list :]
When I first started playing I accidentally put the garbage hat on my cat and it confused me for a long time because I didn’t think that I could gift to an animal and I also didn’t know that the hat was actually wearable because I hadn’t figured out how to change clothes at that point either. It sounds dumb to me now, but I took a long break from playing literally right after the intro/tutorial to everything so I didn’t know how to play at all when I picked it back up lol

i get torches more often than i get cloth. i really like the recycling machines!! i think i got one from the community center and i also crafted one before that and i’ve used them ever since— whether i get trash from crab pots or if i reel it in
jodi stepped out of her house the second i clicked on her trash bin the other night and i flinched so bad i accidentally gave her the soggy newspaper that i had just stolen from her bin right back 😭😭😭
i love the recycling machine. my friend thinks im crazy because i have crab pots all over pelican town but i think its effeficncy 😎 i remember one time i was going through trash snd didnt see alex standing there, he got all mad but he was the one who threw away a gold bar!!
A very small tip, don't use the recycling machine for driftwood. Buy a woodchiper from robin it will turn it into more wood compared to the recycling machine.
You can get the alleyway buffet at any time. There is a space in the fence above the Minecart near the smithy just where the crown of the tree with the pink leaves is. Behind the fence you can chop away a fallen tree and next a big rock and then behind a tree is a hidden golden trashcan. Search it and then you got it

That said what i use it for, i just give it as pam and sam because they are the only ones who wont react negatively to it. sure it's not a top tier gift but it helps early on when you don't got a lot. especially if you're doing a challenge.

You can also use the hardwood grinder from Robin's and put the driftwood in for tapper items like maple.

Refined quartz is a life changer… It's hard to find them in mines… I just fish in the pond near house for broken cd and glasses…
