Good morning everyone, I hope you are all feeling well!
First of all, I get my idea and screenshots from this wonderful video.
I'm the type of guy who likes modpacks, but dimension-related mods tend to be quite overwhelming. The only truly viable sky dimension we currently have is the Aether Mod, and to me, it feels like there’s just too much to do, too much to collect, too many items and armors… which sometimes doesn’t fit very well with Vanilla Minecraft.
Every time I play an overly developed dimension, I get the same feeling: it feels disconnected from Minecraft’s overworld. And usually, these dimension mods are thrown in modpack without thinking any further… This way, I feel like all the content from Vanilla Minecraft becomes useless very quickly in a modded game, or is easily outclassed by overpowered items that you can get too early. This feeling of disconnection is even stronger since some dimension mods restrict tool usage. In the Aether, for example, you can only mine with the wood and stone you find in that dimension. Some people say this is good for preventing speedruns, but personally, I don’t like it … it makes all your Vanilla progression meaningless.
There are also many out-of-place or duplicate items. For example: Double Jump Boots, Dash Armor, Silver and Steel ores… and an excessive number of custom blocks with 16x textures, which makes them incompatible with most resource packs … and so on.
So I asked myself: why not make a simple yet effective sky dimension, focused on gameplay, exploration, and mobs, rather than adding an overwhelming amount of content?
Without going any further, here are the guidelines:
- Immersive access : The dimension should be accessible in an immersive way : not through a structure or portal. I find the idea of flying with your Elytra straight up, saying Y +500, interesting. Once you reach that height, you’re teleported into the dimension.
- Simplicity : The dimension should stay simple. Everyone uses Nether Highways because 1 block in the Nether equals 7 in the Overworld, right? The Sky Dimension should follow a similar logic, except you’d travel with your Elytra (or other modded vehicles like dragons from Ice & Fire, or even your happy ghast). It should feel like an immersive, fast-travel dimension.
- Minimal content : For those who want some features inside, it could contain one dominant biome, with mostly large clouds you can fly through (like in the first video), with a few scattered structures and mobs to visit, but nothing excessive.
- Variety : Other biomes could exist, but they should be smaller and rarer — like an ethereal forest with "spiritual versions" of overworld mobs, or a celestial fortress inhabited by angelic villagers and illagers, or floating crystal islands with shiny creatures…
- No overwhelming content : No custom armors, ores, or blocks. The idea is to stay close to Vanilla,by only using existing content with tweaks (like changing hues, contrasts, resistances, or particle effects through Java code). You get the concept.
To conclude, what do you guys think of such an idea? Moreover, what do you guys think that a good dimension mod should be made of ?
