On the surface the best way to get there is through an opening down the hill near a plains village where water is flowing into it (a savanna village and ruined portal not too far also) with a cross area of a birch forest, plains biome, jungle, and savanna all right near each other. The stronghold and trial chamber is also deeply mixed with the mineshaft.
