Fun fact because apparently a lot of people dont know, kites give a 25% mining speed buff when used. This is easy, does not require you to use the kite in any logical means, infinitely reusable at no opportunity cost, and stacks with mining speed potions while giving the same strength of buff.
i do not know why this feature exists, it's lowkey overpowered and promotes using kites underground without flying them
It also increases placement speed, helped me a lot with my 500k walls underground arena

You don’t need to jump around like that, you can just jump up a few blocks and grapple to the wall and send it out and reel it back in a little so that it’s just hanging in the air and the just sit there til it builds up to 10 minutes and eat a 10 minute food buff

hook yourself to a wall or stand on a platform and drop it down to comfortably get the long buff

It is 15% and not 25%!
Kites are neat but the downtime is a little annoying, that together with the fact that mining speed bonuses from buffs and equipment are capped at 70% makes them very optional!
You can get a mining potion for +25%, an ancient chisel for +25%, a medium food buff for +10%, and finally equip one piece of the mining armor for the last +10% to reach the cap. Or, if you can get an ambrosia, you can use minor food instead of medium and still hit the cap, or you can use a major food to avoid having to use mining armor entirely!
Kites are definitely effective, but you are never forced to use them. I myself find it a lot easier to collect antlion mandibles and blinkroot, and then either buy some medium food from the traveling merchant, or to fish in the desert for a hefty supply of medium food. Then, finding an ancient chisel is not as problematic if you remember that it can only spawn in the top half of the underground desert, and getting a single piece of mining armor is easy if you explore caverns and look out for undead miners, as the armor is a rather common drop! You have a 24% chance of getting either pants or a shirt from a single kill, and you can shimmer shirts into pants and vice versa if desired.
With mining speed, there is a lot of mixing and matching that you can do depending on your personal preferences. It’s really nice to see kites as an extra option if you don’t like using potions or consumables, but even without kites there is quite a lot of freedom with how you can get your mining speed maxed out 😀

I think it’s brilliant that they’ve made kites have some means of function, even if they didn’t need it its just neat

I will rather not have the buff than doing this
