I am aware that this technique is abusable for building since you can create blocks at any orientation and scale, so I stick to only using it for signs and advertisements, and I think it works really well! You can get so much more creative expression that you can with just signs and 1mx1m pixel art. I'm curious about people's opinions though. How far is too far from classic faithful Minecraft builds?
This is of course creative mode/commands only, but the world is completely vanilla, and can be viewed by anyone! Though you can do this manually with commands, I use the Axiom mod to create and edit these Text and Item Displays. This is what I put into the text field to get colour and effects:
{"text":"your text here","color":"#FFFFFF","bold":true,"italic":true}
If you set the "Override Brightness" to something high, then the signs will glow at night. This is shader dependent though, and I had to modify Bliss Shaders to support this.
Also, there are a couple of pieces of map art in there as well.
I have done a fair bit of performance testing, and text displays are actually cheaper than text on signs, so if you were planning to label stuff anyways, then text displays don't cost you anything!

This is awesome!
OK, Reddit seems to have obliterated the image quality when I uploaded these, but unfortunately there’s nothing I can do about it now… if anyone has any suggestions about uploading pictures to Reddit, I’m happy to hear them.
Maybe I have to compress the photos myself before uploading. Or make them 720p instead of 1440, so that they slip under whatever limit Reddit has.
These look great! Its unfortunate that they’re entities because at a distance they do unload
Holy shit, what a amazing day to have eyes. I have never wanted to explore a world more.
Damn this is cool!
I’m impressed
