You could do this with only a fraction of a block with a 1×300 water pool and a sliver of a block of lava on top, but that would be a bit crazy

Lava fishing in the ocean is gonna be fun. Though, you don't get hell crates, so that's the only(?) downside.

I can see this being very useful in skyblock, great bit of knowledge moving forward.

Actually kinda useful for skyblock seed, by using secret seeds to also spawn in liquid bubbles and fishing cloud islands you could very easily get all 3 fishing pools
Alternatively, at the bottom of the water pool you can fill the lava with a falling block(sand, silt, ect.) , then connect the pool to it

Hmmm yould probably only need 1 of these in Skyblock. Put it about about 9 blocks into the cavern layer. Underground and surface fish are mostly comingled so you can stand in the underground above it for those. Then drop to cavern for those. Could build it over the or inside of a mob farm and just use ice blocks and sand for desert, corruption, crimson, and snow biomes and use mud for glowshroom and jungle biomes. Outside of that you just need ocean and sky/space which are only water fishing and Boom all done. Like maybe 2000 blocks total including the water.
