Strategy-wise, yes, unforunately. Mage is by far the funniest class to play but it lacks strenght, especially in the early-game.

IMO you have to evaluate each class at different points in progression. And while it’s true that Mage has the worst pre-boss stage (and is arguably relatively the worst any class ever is at any stage) after you get past evil bosses mage really opens up and will be a pretty consistently strong class for a majority of the game with traits that other classes don’t have access to like weapon agnostic life stealing and good support weapons like the magnet sphere or nimbus rod.
I would still say it goes to summoner but it feels wrong to say they’re the worst. Just the most difficult.

I’d say mage is only weak in early hardmode, other than that it’s a pretty strong class

Depends on just how you define “weak”

thrower is the weakest class

I would say it’s strong especially end games when you have the last prism weapon

For every niche there is a slightly better class (glass cannon summoner, tank melee, ranger for range), but mage has a lot of utility (good homing, piercing, wall piercing etc). The mana sucjs tho, literally barely playable without mana potions or mana regen potion (on bosses without adds)

Technically yes but it’s not even bad

Haven’t played it in a while but I played it recently for a couple hours and early game, it’s pretty bleak man. I spent most of my time rng-ing for desert fossils and it ended up getting enough for sellable valuables, gems for the Amber staff, Amber hook, and Amber cloak, and i pretty easily decimated the eye of Cthulhu and King slime, but it just feels so, gosh darn weak tbh.

Not weakest, but the least fun of all.

I mean melee is the strongest no contest. Range Mage and Summoner is kinda debatable. I think Range is a solid second but have to spend a lot of resources on ammo. Mage only has okay dps but really good crown control for events. Summoner has the highest dps but have to stay melee much more than melee

As someone who just completed a summoner playthrough, dying to every boss while my mage teammate told me to git gud, mage is NOT the weakest. I always felt like I was barely clinging on to life in my summoner playthrough

Only pre skeletron. Objectively the weakest class pre skeletron. After skeletron it is only ever weak if you play it wrong.
Prewof it’s the best class when you include zapinator and second best for “for the worthy”/zenith wall.
Pre mechs its insanely good for Fishron with the crystal serpent + probably second strongest against twins and skeletron if you fight either as first mech. Then the 2nd best against destroyer with the tome of inf wisdom if you fight destroyer second or third.
Preplantera sky fracture, crystal serpent, and meteor staff manage to still keep it the second best class despite all the weapons being pre mech.
Pregolem inferno fork shreds him but so does a copper short sword smh.
Precultist razor blade typhoon is on par with post moonlord weapons.
For moonlord razor blade typhoon and nebula arcanum will make sure you defeat bro real quick.
The real deciding factor on whether mage is good depends entirely on how good the player is at mana management. If the player has perpetual mana sickness they might as-well play a different class. Mana sickness and complete lack of mana management destroys the dps of mage despite it being one of the better classes for every boss after skeletron.
Sincerely, a Mage main who has also played all the other classes.
