I put this as a spoiler just in case but anyway, I was growing Star Fruit in my greenhouse and I was making it into jam because I don't have a lot of kegs yet, and I was looking at the wiki and I saw that dried star fruit cost 7,910g while the jam cost 2,170 (I have artisan)

I was like this is such a better was to get money faster! It only takes one day to get almost 8k each 😊 and is much faster to get money early game for me.

I definitely think I'm going to make more dehydrators now.

But I have a question, is dehydrating Star Fruit better than ageing star fruit wine?

  1. Dehydrating is only viable if you have “too much” fruit. Otherwise it’s a poor way to make money honestly. Kegs make a lot more. The generally accepted “best” way is ancient fruit to kegs and sell the base wine because it lines up for 7 days with no replanting necessary.

  2. Dehydrators take 5 fruit instead of 1 like wine or jam, so the profit margin is much lower. I personally use them a lot anyway because I don’t want to put a lot of space into machines and I’m willing to make money slower in the service of aesthetics.

    Another keg v. dehydrator v. preserves jar.

    5 Normal Starfruit is 4,125 G.
    5 Gold Starfruit is 5,625 G.
    5 Wine (takes 7 days) is 11,250 G. Can be casked.
    5 Jelly (takes 2-3 days) is 7,750 G.
    5 fruit in a dehydrator makes 1 Dehydrated fruit (next day) is 5,650 G.

    your issues will be quantity of fruit, processing method and time. Tossing everything in kegs and wait a week is less strain for me.

    I don’t know why I’d never paid attention to dehydrators before, but I always have too much fruit so I feel like this is a good option for me too!!

  5. As another person commented, I use dehydrators to process the excess fruit from my wine setup. This example is from my most recent farm year 2- mid 3. My greenhouse and island were completely filled with ancient fruit, my house was on its way to being completely filled with kegs, and my cellar was completely filled with casks.

    My intake significantly outpaced my ability to process the fruit into wine, let alone age it. I kept the exact amount of wine needed to fill my casks when the aging is done, every other bottle gets sold. I STILL had significant excess fruit, and it’s not like storing it makes sense, I would literally have an entire new crop in a week.

    So after all my kegs are filled, all excess goes in the dehydrator. I made collecting and refilling my dehydrators a part of my morning chores, so I don’t need the mass amount like I do kegs. Usually by time the week is up, I’ve processed everything into wine and dried fruit.

    Always impressive to see the results from people who really commit to a strategy they enjoy.

  7. guess that depends on how many days you’re spending loading them. I find them too tedious. kegs I can load and leave alone for a week while I do other things. I typically have 1-2 dehydrators for raisins and raccoon quests, but other than that, I just use jars and kegs in a shed. I also don’t have many animals, so I don’t need a ton of casks for cheese. fill the cellar with wine, then sell the excess base quality. but you play how you want, that’s just how I do it

    I max out berry production in the greenhouse and I get such excess that dehydrating is worth it

  9. I like to have a crop that goes into each machine.
    Ancient fruit = keg
    Pumpkin = preserve jar
    Pineapple = dehydrator

    And then I just sort of put my odds and ends places after that. I use the ginger island farm to have a steady supply of the pineapples and pumpkins.

    I love dehydrators. Take my surplus tree fruit and extra common mushrooms. Throw them in the dehydrator. Star fruit and ancient fruit go in the kegs or preserves barrels.
