Is Terraria’s Mage Class Really That Bad?

Is Terraria’s Mage class really that bad? Let’s talk about it.

Terraria players like to say that Mage/Magic is the worst class in Terraria, due to it’s lack of strength throughout the game. I however think that Mage isn’t a horrible class in Terraria, and in this video I will explain why. This is not a Terraria class ranking video, or Terraria classes ranked.

  1. Yes, they are the ONLY class with a dedicated system that penalizes their DPS by engaging with it (via mana sickness OR having to use mana cost reduction accesories instead of another damage accessory). Next question

  2. Mage was the first class I ever (properly) used (before I used all classes at once) so it holds a special place in my heart, and I find it the funnest class to use as it’s very unique

  3. As a mage main I have to say mage sucks it is by far the worst class in the game, sure it isnt bad no class is truly bad is terraria but it is the worst when compared to other classes its weapons at every stage are much harder to get then every other class and they deal similar if no worse damage then other classes and in order to do good you have to properly manage your mana and still you are only similar to slightly better then every other class. But hopefully they solve the weapon obtainability issue which it looks like they will with the next update.

  4. Thank God Terraria Devs have ears mage Pre hardmode is getting the love it deserves and I hope the mana system gets changed, better amour, weapons, and other QOL for mage we will see about hardmode stuff

  5. First the mana flower suck there's mana regeneration (lantern+potion+mana from shimmer+accessory) extra + make the dmg increase like 30% with the potion being 20% yeah pretty strong

+ To add in late game the best weapon is NIT THE TYPHOON OR BETSY WRATH it either bubble gun and my favorite RAZONIPPER

  6. Currently doing a playthrough right now. One nitpick I have is that killing mobs as a mage drops mana instead of hearts. Made me die more often in events like pumpkin and frost moon unfortunately

  7. Do far from experience I can say mage is easily the worst class
The class in the endgame is ridiculous fun to play
You deal ridiculous amounts of damage
But you also take shitloads of damage
Which especially against the moonlord is really tough

I also found out that the mage is probably the only class where getting post moonlord weapons doesn't make moonlord easier
I found that the nebula blaze works easy better for moonlord over the lunar flare and last prism
It takes longer but is much safer and consistent

However the damage mage is able to deal is absolutely insane
I'm doing like 2k plus with the nebula blaze
Something even my 100% critical hit sniper rifle can't compete with
Or even my 100% crit rate zenith

  8. Honestly I think people are too reliant on mana potions. In my current mage playthrough I haven't touched them, and it's going great. You just have to pause attacking every now and then to let it regen (mana regen potions help)

  9. I think the biggest issue is that people don't understand Mana Regen. Due to how mana regeneration works there are two things you should always be doing;
1] Have a source of "Mana Regeneration". The Mana Regen Potion Mana Band is the most reliable, but there are a few other sources that can help (Mana Star Shimmer Upgrade, Star in a Bottle).
2] Try to avoid tapping out. If you have to start from 0 your regeneration take a lot longer.
3] Extra tip; Get more Mana period. Mana Regeneration is based off how much max mana you have.
The actual regeneration math is absolute absurdity, but it basically checks if you are "Regenerating (IE Stationary and/or have a 'Regeneration buff')", how much mana you have left and how much mana you have max. IIRC the mac regeneration rate is something like 200 mana a SECOND.

So; Max out Mana, get a Mana Regeneration Band and/or Potion and stop firing for a ~20 ticks (less than a second) every now and again before tapping out.

TLDR; Mana Potions Suck, Mana Regeneration Potions good and don't empty the tank.

  10. Mage is good, the problem is that its competing aguinst
    melle (Mage + ranged + defence )
    Ranged ( extremly consistend)
    Summoner ( glass cannon)

evertthing is bad compared to melle be fair here

  11. I've just started to keep track of my mana in battle. I have not used mana potions since prehardmode. I just use mana regen potions to make sure my mana returns quickly in a fight.

  12. saving grace of early game mage back then was defo the water bolt but ig devs didnt like it that you could get a weapon thats effective for everything pre hardmode so it couldnt spawn near the surface but they didnt really compensate by updating early mage progression

  13. There are more than a few misconceptions in this video.

For starters you absolutely don't need mana potions, you can easily use the mana regeneration potion instead.
When you do drink mana potions, as long as you don't go above mana sickness 1, your dps actually improves (in the sense that you don't need to stop dealing damage to regen). It only gets worse at mana sickness 2 and 3.
Despite that, the mana flower and its upgrades are usually a waste of a slot, aside from a couple very specific scenarios.

It might seem like mana is an unnecessary mechanic in terraria, and i agree with that to an extent, but we should remember that mage has one thing other classes don't: homing weapons, that don't sacrifice damage and work from a whole screen of distance.

Mage is at it's strongest when he's nowhere near a boss and still dealing consistent damage.

Ps: one more thing, PLEASE don't use the spectre hood and get high mana sickness, your damage will get nuked from orbit.
In fact, i would advice you not to use the hood as your main helmet in general. The best way to use spectre armor is to use the mask and only swap to the hood to heal, then swap back.

  14. We meet again Hudson, mage mentioned! 2:30 you don't need to drink mana potions, mages skill ceiling is extremely high and mana management is a core part of the class, not letting your mana go below half is the best way to get the most optimal amount of DPS, a potion should only be used in the last stretch of the fight when your running out of options and you really need the burst of DPS no matter how low it is. 1:30 Its not mentioned in this segment but jungle armor actually has extremely high defense and is on-par with gold/platinum tier, some people just get it regardless of what class their using because its consistent and easy to farm if you know what your doing, its considered a pre-boss armor set no matter what difficulty because of that. 2:27 So this is where we have to get into hybrids, armor mixing and other class setups like reforges, its no secret that every mono mage set is pretty bad as their set bonus is almost never worth using, because of this armor mixing has gained a lot of popularity and has become the norm for specific classes, including mage, where the best way to fix all of mages issues while also increasing their defense or offense is simply to just mix pieces of armor or even pieces from other classes, like summoner for example, to improve your DPS and to become less reliant on mana as you'll always have a backup weapon to use during downtime to remain at a constant spread of DPS, infact some of the fastest kill times on bosses are from Mage and Summoner hybrid builds using things like pieces of the forbidden set or just general damage increases. This last part may be a bit of a nitpick but I feel like you didn't mention the entire reason people diss mage and its mostly because of how grindy it is, a lot of their best gear comes from mob drops at low rates or grindy crafting recipes that get tedious when you have to do it in your billionth playthrough, the weapons may be powerful and unique but they really make you work for them.

  15. I recently finished a master mode mage playthrough and not even once was low defense a concern to me.
If we assume that a Mage player will constantly be taking a beating, why would we not also assume that a Summoner player is having the same issue when they are having to use Whips?
Jungle Armor is also pre-Boss and is better than relying on RNG for Gem Robe + Wizard hat or Traveling Merchant sales.

The real issues with Mage end at bad availability of early game options and lackluster Mana Management system.
Wand of Sparking isn't guaranteed (otherwise, Wand of Frosting is a great weapon), Gem staffs (pre-rework) suck, Thunder Zapper requires treading treacherous underground desert or fishing, Vilethorn is amazing but only available in one of the world evils and isn't Shimmerable (bummer). Demon Scythe is king and theoretically pre-Boss but most people won't bother going for it.
Your guaranteed option is Meteor Armor + Space Gun, which is plenty enough to beat Skeletron & start actually farming Demon Scythe for WoF. Alternatively, you can use Magic Missile/Flame Lash or Flower of Fire.

    As for mana management.
Using Mana Regen potion & Stars in a Bottle on your arena you just have to stop attacking for a second to refill your mana entirely. If are you really concerned about your DPS (spoiler, there's no reason to be at any point of progression), do that and you'll do more DPS than gulping Mana Potions 24/7. And once you reach HM and get 200 & 300 Mana Potions, most good weapons can't even fully spend mana to stack Mana Sickness to unreasonable amounts.

  16. I hate Mage because it feels like a lesser summoner/ranger like the other two classes do mage's job better, are easier to acess, and don't require you to waste up accessory slots just so you can refill your mana without spamming the refill mana key all of the time. If you like Mage that's fine, but I'm never touching this class ever again.
