So, I don't know why this is happening, but when I don't let the animals outside, they just don't eat. The hay is there, but nothing changes. This image was taken around the time I first went into the barn. Do I need to do something else?

Edit: Thank you for telling me it's an auto feeder. Can you tell I'm not actually that smart?

they are eating! you have an auto feeder that automatically refills their hay each day, so it may not look like it!

Are you saying they’re not eating because you don’t have to replace the hay? Because the barn you have has an auto feeder.

This looks like a deluxe top level barn. The feed gets automatically refilled

  4. you have an automatic feeder, meaning that there will always be hay on the feeder unless your silo is empty 🙂

They are eating. You have the fully upgraded barn which auto-refills the hay.

  6. Your Barn is Upgraded to have Auto Feeders.
So before you see the empty slots, they are already filled back up again.
You should be able to see the eaten amount in your Silo.
    You are doing nothing wrong!

You have a deluxe barn so it automatically refills the hay. They may have not eaten yet or they have and it refilled. If your animals aren’t unhappy then you’re fine. Make sure you pet them everyday!

I don’t think anyone has mentioned it yet but you have an automatic feeder in the barn

Don’t listen to anyone else, your poor animals are starving. Make sure to feed them healthy fruits and veggies directly!

When you fully upgrade a bar or coop and the feeder looks like that, then it’s automatic feeding.

Have you been oppressing the residents of stardew valley by chance? Could be a hunger strike
