Doylist Explaination: CA has been pretty consistent about not making spouses a balance choice. No-one gives you any game breaking gifts, and Harvey still charges full price on any Medical Bills. No Min-Maxing spouses who give you benefits.
Watsonian Explanation: Harvey mentions in certain dialogue that his practice struggles to stay solvent. He’s doing you a favor by not saddling you with his debt.

Harvey is notoriously strapped for cash. The Villagers don’t seem to pay their medical bills and the only way he can afford coffee is by selling blood and plasma…*your* blood, which he alludes to as “emergency surgery” when you’re stunned and disorientated by attacks in the mines. One day he might go even further into the black market, using ham radio to evade authorities. Farmer must keep the Valley safe and feed Harvey copious amounts of free coffee, lest the emergency surgeries spiral out of control….

I absolutely love my decision to marry Harvey. I never thought about the finances especially since I basically run the damn town lol

And he still charges you 1k when he finds you passed out in the forest!

He doesn’t own the hospital (probably it belongs to the town), he just runs it. He can’t really embezzle the hospital’s money.

Why would you want to combine incomes with a rural doctor? You make more in a day than he probably does in a year. Also, would it really be fair to the rest of the spouses to take his money? Of the 12 men and women currently available to marry in SDV only two of them have full time jobs; the rest are either unemployed, part timers, seasonal workers, or “self employed”… one of them literally lives in what looks like a converted storage shack on the beach. .

Yes he’s a doctor but he really isn’t rich. He mentions many many many times the clinic isn’t doing well, he’ll need to get patients from out of town if he wants to continue, ect ect. Honestly he is probably in debt if not just barely skating by. He’s probably doing you a favour by not saddling you with his debt.
And that’s how it works in real life to. I mean you don’t go to the hospital and go “oh no it’s fine my *insert relationship or family member* works here” and get treated for free.
AND it literally cost less than the first backpack. I don’t mind giving hubby some pocket money for saving me from literal death 😭

He’s keeping his student loans away from you. There’s a shortage of rural family medicine docs for a reason!

He’s Rural/Family Med . This is still pretty close to accurate

We make more in one week of wine production than he sees in a year. If anything, *we* should be offering to combine our finances.

I shall totally court him next time.

Harvey isn’t exactly swimming in gold, as others said. Plus. unless you want an actual joint finances mechanic, it’s more unfair on our Farmer’s part, since spouses don”t touch our gold.
