If you have an upgraded watering can (which you’ll need for the volcano anyway), you can just hold charge and cover all the holes with water at once, and the buddy will pop out.
Otherwise do the thing of placing items on top of three holes and whacking him when he comes out the last one.

You can also just barely swing your sword at them, which is what I did in my playthrough.
