My kids are always giving me grief about this ๐Ÿ˜‚ They throw away their tools when they get upgrades while I feel like that's a waste of resources. I'd rather just use up the lower ones and then switch to the better ones. (They're wood and have a short lifespan so it's not like I have to hold onto them for much longer anyway.)

My oldest was just picking on me about it again and told me to "tell the whole world to stop throwing their wood tools away then" and that "literally everyone throws away their wood tools on once they get stone ones". Well, I can't tell the whole world but I can come to Reddit ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ

So… does everyone throw away their wood tools once they get stone ones?

(For the record, this is just playful banter between my kids and I, please don't take it too seriously ๐Ÿ™ƒ)

  1. Personally I only make a pickaxe, maybe an ax if its a hardcore world for quick meat and I usually keep both and put them in a chest as a souvenir

  2. I make a pickaxe to mine 3 cobblestone then never use wood again. I then put my wooden pickaxe in an item frame above my crafting table.

    Edit: 1 word

  3. Depends on my mood, but I never throw them away. Either I use them as fuel or I really use them until they break. Sometimes I put them in an item frame as decoration/memory.

I also always use up my wooden tools! I know itโ€™s just a game but it always feels like a waste to me to not finish using them

And what’s the use of making wooden tools besides a pickaxe? I simply make a wooden pickaxe, use 16 cobblestones to make the “Full set” of stone tools, and throw the wooden pickaxe away

I only make a wooden pickaxe, mine 3 stones and throw it away right after. then I mine until I get at least 3 irons and never come back to stone tools

I make a wooden pickaxe and mine 11 stone to make a stone pickaxe and a furnace, then throw away the wood.

I donโ€™t throw the stone away as soon as I make iron though, I only use the iron to mine ores that require it. I use the stone otherwise until I have a diamond pickaxe, and then until I get a bunch of diamonds and/or Unbreaking on it, then I throw away the iron one

I usually only make an axe & pickaxe and when I move to stone Iโ€™ll make an item frame for both and just keep them in whatever base I make. Keep them as a little memento.

  10. Consider *how much* youโ€™re wasting by throwing them away; you only need a wooden pickaxe, letโ€™s assume you use maybe a fifth of its durability.

    3*0.8 = 2.4 planks worth of wasted wood;
    Two sticks = 0.5 planks:
    0.5*0.8 = 0.4 planks worth wasted

    Total: 2.8 planks worth wasted

Thatโ€™s just under 3 quarters of a *single log block*; not much being wasted there!

  11. Your not saving resources as there is limitless amount of wood available. The time you waste using the wood pick axe could have been spent getting more wood than what it costed in the first place, so if anything you’re wasting resources by using it.

Not that we need to min-max the amount of resources saved. But most of all your just mining slow for no reason, so of course they get annoyed.

I only ever craft a wooden pick and I always either use it till it breaks or burn it for fuel in a furnace

  13. i only make a wooden pickaxe to get 16 of stone and craft a stone sword, pickaxe, axe and a furnace

  14. i mine enough resources to upgrade my wooded tools once they break, but i use them until they break unless there’s the rare chance i come across iron before i upgrade. mining loads of cobble is usually one of my first moves cuz i like using stone bricks in my builds.

I don’t even make wooden tools beyond either an ax and a pickaxe. Wooden tools are clutter. Once you realize how easy it is to get iron, it’s not worth the random chests or inventory space taken up

  16. Make a wood pickaxe. Mine stone with it until it breaks. Make all stone tools. This is the way.

  17. The only wood tool I make is a pickaxe to mine three cobblestone then craft a stone pickaxe to mine more cobblestone.

I use the wood pickaxe as fuel in my first furnace.

  18. I use mine as fuel in the furnace once I get iron, which means I keep them long enough to get said iron

I only make a pickaxe personally
the new ones last way longer in comparison so I strongly doubt wooden tools really go to waste
and besides, trees can be replanted so its not like you’re losing a finite resource

  20. I use them to smelt iron. That way they get revenge on the stone tools that replaced them.

Craft wooden pickaxe, mine down immediately and get stone for every other tool, never craft wooden tools

I am a stingy player who consistently uses all my lower tier tools until I have plentiful materials to make higher tools. I use up my wooden pickaxe to mine stone until it breaks, and only then I switch over to stone.

The only exception is a diamond pickaxe if Iโ€™m going to the nether and need to mine netherite or obsidian

  23. I mine 3 logs by hand, make a crafting table and a pick

If there’s stone immediately accessible, I mine 3 stone and immediately make a stone pick. Otherwise, I might mine another โ‰ˆ 13 for a furnace, axe and sword before surfacing

There’s no world where I use the wooden pick to break more than 20 blocks, or use any other wood tools at all

The pick does go in the furnace though, not on the ground

Remember, time is a resource too, and it’s not as renewable as wood
