Hello
Only recently I've learned that by placing a fence/lightning rod on a grass starter the animals won't eat that grass and it'll be able to spread every day.
So how small can I make the fenced area so that all 12 animals can eat grass every day? Let's assume that the 1 fence post+grass starter has spread area of 1 quality sprinkler (3×3 tiles). How many of these would it take to keep them fed? (and let's ignore buying hay from Marnie for the sake of argument)

Unless there is tall grass in the yard for them to eat, and tall grass doesn’t need to be watered, you’re still going to have to keep feed in their feeder.
coop animals need 2 tufts of grass and barn animals need 4 per day (1 and 2 for blue grass). a full tile with grass (4 tufts) has a 25% chance of growing 1-2 tufts next to it (for eavh tile). source: the grass page and the animals page on the wiki
im not sure how i would approach this math, but i think the space may be a bit small even if you start with every single tile containing grass…?
Realistically you only 2 sprinklers worth of space, but I’d go for more.
Each animal only eats one square of grass a day, but the chances of grass spreading is 65% a day, so you should be aiming for at least 3 sprinklers worth of space at the very least.
At this point, the animals aren’t even pets anymore…
I make a fence out of lighting rods with grass underneath.
So it propogates from the perimeter.
Then I only have a couple of grass sources inside
