*Warning: Rant* I think the reason I hate Pierre is that he's a greedy capitalist hiding behind a "small business owner" title. He buys your crops and resells them as his own, he gives a whole speech about community and small town values when the Community Center reopens, then admits his actual dream is to keep opening stores until he's "extremely wealthy." He tried selling vegetables at 10x markup, he ignores his family for business. There's even a secret stash hidden behind a bookshelf in his bedroom that he begs you not to tell his wife about. As much as he dogs on JojaMart, the guy literally is JojaMart, just with better PR. If that doesn't scream the worst version of capitalism, idk what does. Not to make the game more deep than it is, but it feels like an intentional choice by Eric to shed light on the real system. It's clear to us when playing the game how annoying this guy is but it's hard for us to actually see this in our day to day lives 😂

I just started playing the other week and it made me so mad and annoyed when I put all that work into the community centre and he used it as an excuse to get a monopoly on the local economy. Like I do something nice and he goes and makes it about himself and like I didn’t even have beef with the Joja people so I feel bad for them like they got rent to pay and possibly families to feed they just living too. Honestly it all made me feel like I was just a pawn in his grand scheme.
What bugs me isn’t the price markup thing, it’s that he doubles down even after all of his customers leave in disgust. If you tell him he went too far, he gets mad and tells you it’s not your concern what he does with his business.
Bro, Pierre and his shenanigans are why he’s one of my favourite characters.
I mean at prices like that, the demand is going to be extremely low. That’s far from an efficient market. I think he is the opposite; he is a horrible capitalist that doesn’t understand basic market principles.
Yeah, he’s a pretty well-written gray character. Has some redeeming qualities and some despicable ones.
He does care about his community; there are times the townspeople curb his greed, which they couldn’t do if he didn’t care about their good opinions. He could have raised his prices once Joja goes out of business and he’s the only store in town, but he doesn’t.
So yeah, CA did a good job of making Pierre a real mixed bag.
I got a lot of Pierre cutscenes before I finished the community center, and he comes off as a better character that way. He tries doing the whole 10x markup thing, the secret stash, the desire to open more stores, etc and it never fully materializes. Then, if you chose the less violent option after the community center route is done, he appeals to the community to boycott Joja and actually shows that he does know the other townspeople pretty well and misses when they were more of a community. So in my playthrough, he starts off as kinda bad but develops into being less bad.
That being said, the general dislike of Pierre is still justified, especially if you sold him your crops. (So lucky I didn’t.)
He really couldn’t just sell them at a 50% markup and be happy with his actual profit
Pierre is probably also the owner for Joja xd
This is why I don’t get the Pierre hate. He’s an obvious caricature of the libertarian small business owner, also, he reminds me of CMOT Dibbler with his geographic differences from others — believing all the money should be in his pockets. Sure, it’s a caricature meant to draw hate, but not for people to internalise the hate. It’s like hating Allan Rickman offscreen because he plays such despicable villains.
