A bat/winged bug will probably spawn somewhere and give you stairs.

You should’ve taken a left turn at Albuquerque

Make sure you go to each edge. Something flying might spawn, which (after killing) might prompt the ladder on the infested floor.

Can you make some monster musk? That’ll bring the baddies out of hiding. Or just toss a bomb on that last piece of dirt. I’ve had this happen on this exact floor map on a bad luck day, and there was a little bat hiding offscreen.

This is why I carry more than 100 stones or have a staircase handy when I explore down there. Like the Boy Scouts, always be prepared.

I think you need to dig in the dirt areas.

You run around the perimeter holding the the button to descend.
Unless you use mods that broke the game it is hidden on the edge
