No display entities, no mods, just good ole Vanilla tricks. It's totally possible for survival too (minus the lantern player head, but there are alternatives). I've been slowly planning out a somewhat functional, vanilla, survival Tardis build in my free time. Here's how it's looking so far.
P.S. I made custom textures for warped wood blocks myself (admittedly low effort). I also used invisible item frames and nether portal resource packs too.

Player head should be possible for all but hardcore I think; if you get blown up by a charged creeper I think your skull drops. Beautiful build!
