Is 16gb of RAM good enough for very large modpacks + modding? I don’t know a lot about laptops, but I’m worried about the 16gb ram, my 8 year old laptop also only has 16gb ram and other laptops in similar price category often have 32gb??

  1. 16 gb of ram should be fine, it does depend on the amount of mods

steer away from that thing though, 6 gb VRAM for a new gpu in 2026 is definitely insane

It’s ddr5 memory. You’re lucky to get 16gb right now for what 32 used to cost. It’s just the unfortunate state of computer hardware at the moment. That being said, I never give any packs more than 8gb to work with anyway and I’ve only ever seen one recommend more, so you should be safe.

I have 16gb of ram and ATM10 and All The Mons run fine on my laptop. Even with other programs open.

I can play ATM10 with shaders and without stuttering with 8GB allocated out of my 16GB. I have a decent CPU and GPU though.

Go for 32g, while 16 would be enough, you will rarely have all 16 available for Minecraft if you wanted to play a heavy pack. Windows eats memory for breakfast. I found even 32 was insufficient, would get crashes for out of memory frequently.
Generally I expect half of the memory to be consumed by something else. So if that leftover half is insufficient, you should go for a higher spec.

  6. The main issue with newer laptops and newer CPU is they go down in clock, yours will basically run at 1.4GHZ most of the time to avoid overheating, yes its capable of going up to 4.8GHZ, but it will rarely ever do it, because of the temperature it would generate would melt the laptop itself. Minecraft still rely a lot on CPU raw power, most other games that aren’t made in Java can be optimized to run on multiple cores and don’t really care about the clock speed of the CPU, so this laptop is able to handle a lot of heavy game titles, but yet can struggle with Minecraft modded because of the low raw clock speed.

16GB should be enough if you aren’t a fan of shaders, these eat the ram and GPU power for dinner.
