Probably to reduce lag or something, like imagine a house the size of half the world, and the game has to check every single tile both blocks and walls to see if house is valid.

Yup, I hate this one, too. There should be some kind of ankh or totem to plunk down and override this just for yer spawn point to trigger custom “room math”.
