They become stumps during winter and regrow in spring. Mushroom trees do the same.
Edit: never mind I completely misunderstood. They’re not dead they just don’t have leaves.

The moss prevents the leaves from growing 😭 you have to remove it before it gets to this point. Although to my knowledge, it’s just visually unpleasant. But they still act like normal trees
