Another advice to find the shimmer: Go to the entrance to the beach biome (the one on the same side as the Jungle) and just before you enter the beach, mine down till you find it.
Also, Splunker Potions help find the Shimmer since the stone around it doesn't have any ores inside of it when the biome is created in world generation.
