I'm guessing the artist knew about Lapis, but assumed it used the same base texture as Gold/Diamond/Iron/Coal/Redstone. Actually, from what I can gather, at the time it was added, Lapis was the only ore that did not use that base texture, until Emeralds were added, which also used a unique base texture. So it seems like an easy mistake for someone who knows the game, but isn't intimately familiar with it.

I think you need to lay off the daily crossword for a few days. Your brain's starting to slow down. If you keep this up, your brain will fall into complete stasis!

how did nobody see the comically small coal ore next to normal sized blocks?
edit: I now realise that is a dropped item of coal ore. wait what I thought when coal gets mined it drops as a the coal item?

0:49 the texture for the ores was changed in 1.17 though lol, or at least to what the textures are now.
The ores didn't change appearance in 1.14. It was after that. 1.18, I think

You are observing over the not lapis that you missed something. Where you wrote the word "This" there is an iron ore that is ever an item an optical illusion or a new wired block.
I'm not sure what caused it, but my first 1.18 world I spawned like five blocks from surface lapis on stony shores. I've got the picture somewhere. It still confuses me that you can mine lapis with stone now too.

None of them should have the old textures in the first place since it is post 1.14 (There are lanterns, crafting table has new texture and maybe sculk in the background)
Perhaps this is the ore that originated the blue… stone? that we also saw in the trailer/wallpaper
