I've seen a lot of people wondering about rare drops and the luck it takes to get them in Terraria. Here, I want to actually inform you ladies and gentlemen, that luck is actually a stat, that can me measured and boosted to its limit, which can lead to a drastic boost to rare drops, occurrences. I feel like I got annoyed by all of the misinformation spread about luck in this beautiful game so I present my comprehensive guide to luck in Terraria.

We will start with what most people are interested in — increasing your luck. Here's all the ways to do it:

  1. Greater Luck potion.

It is crafted by combining pink pearl, a ladybug and a waterleaf with a bottle on a alchemy table or a placed bottle. The Greater Luck Potion gives you a "Lucky" buff after drinking it which gives +0.3 luck for 5 minutes, followed by +0.2 luck for the next 5 minutes (the equivalent of a "regular" Luck Potion), and +0.1 luck for the final 5 minutes (the equivalent of the Lesser Luck Potion).

  1. Galaxy pearl.

It is actually really easy to get, requiring you to throw a pink pearl in the shimmer. It will permanently boost your luck by 0.03 which might seem like not exactly a lot, but hey, it still does boost your luck!

  1. Garden gnome.

To obtain this one, you are gonna need some living wood trees in your world, one is enough tho. Head to them at daytime. I'd suggest getting a lifeform analyser from the travelling merchant if you can because it can help you a lot in detecting a gnome. If you manage to detect one, be careful not to kill it. To actually obtain the item we need, you wanna lure the gnome to the surface and it will petrify from the sun. Then, mine it with a pickaxe. The garden gnome will increase your luck by 0.2 when placed nearby, si ilar to heart lantern.

  1. Our two beloved accessories.

The lucky horseshoe, obtained from the chests located on the sky Islands and the lucky coin, dropped from the pirate invasion in hardmode (I'd suggest focusing flying Dutchmans since the drop rates from them are drastically higher compared to normal enemies from the event. Equipping both of these will boost your luck by an additional 0.1.

  1. IMPORTANT!!! TORCH LUCK

One of the easiest ways to increase your luck by another 0.2 is by placing correct torches in a correct biome. What I mean is, for example, we need to take any underground biome we want (this will not work in the dungeon or the lizard temple) and place plenty of torches in the biome, BUT these torches must be connected to the biome. For example if we take our jungle biome, we need to place a lot of jungle torches in the underground jungle and that works with every other biome. Even on the surface

(If you are wondering, it's bone torches for normal underground or anywhere outside the Snow biome, Desert, Jungle, Corruption, Crimson, Hallow, Dungeon or Jungle Temple.) Normal torches do not boost your luck at all.

  1. Lantern night

A pretty rare event that boost your luck by 0.3, that's all you need to know about it.

IMPORTANT!!!

By this point, combining all of the luck bonuses I've told you we've hit the luck boost cap. Yeah, unfortunately you cannot boost your luck by more than 1.00, however if you find the luck bonuses I've mentioned difficult to get, or just don't like them, here's some more.

  1. Shimmer coins

By simply throwing coins into the shimmer you can increase your luck, yeah. The coefficient of the luck bonus you get is pretty difficult to calculate, especially with the different kinds of coins, the fact that the bonus you get from this is temporary and will fall down with time before it reaches 0.

  1. Ladybugs.

Touching a ladybug grants you a 0.2 luck bonus which linearly decreases to 0 over the course of 12 minutes (It's +0.4 boost that decreases over the course of 24 minutes if you touch a GOLDEN LADYBUG)

If you use them as bait it actually decreases your luck.

  1. Killing the guide.

Lastly, killing the guide will give you a similar luck boost as touching ladybugs.

These are all the luck bonuses I've managed to find by researching.

If you wanna know what your current luck is without any mods then there's a simple way to do it, tho, you are gonna need a wizard NPC. You need to talk to him, and the words he tells you are based on your luck. Here's the list

If luck is ≥ 0.75

  • "You are overflowing with a blessing of stupendous prosperity!!"
  • "Excessive health and happiness gush from your very being! You are a Godsend!!"

If luck is < 0.75 and ≥ 0.5

  • "Have you a garden of four-leaf clovers? You are bursting with essences of great fortune!"
  • "Serendipity smiles upon you! It is likely you shall find profit in all things!"

If luck is < 0.5 and ≥ 0.25

  • "You are giving off a positive energy, like something grand could occur at any moment."
  • "There are vibes of good fortune emanating from you, as though your wishes could possibly come true."

If luck is < 0.25 and > 0

  • "I sense a speck of good karma about you, but I could be mistaken."
  • "There's something unusually warm about you. I'm not sure how to place it, but keep walking in that direction."

If luck is 0

(The Wizard does not use any of these quotes if luck is 0.)

If luck is < 0 and ≥ −0.14

  • "The air feels dull and gloomy where you step. Be wary of ill feelings."
  • "Is something bothering you? Something doesn't feel quite right about you."

If luck is < −0.14 and ≥ −0.28

  • "Negative energy is seeping from your pores. I wouldn't take any chances today."
  • "Unfortunate omens hang over your head. You DID forward that letter, right?"

If luck is < −0.28 and ≥ −0.42

  • "I feel a terrible fate surrounding you! You should just stay in bed today!"
  • "What manner of salt did you spill to receive such misfortune!?"

If Luck is < −0.42 (impossible to access)

  • "Stay away! You are dragging a behemoth of woeful bad luck in your wake! I want nothing of it!!"
  • "Did you smash every mirror in WorldName!? You hapless fool, you are cursed beyond help!!"

And that's my comprehensive guide to luck in Terraria. Hope this helped some people who want to know how luck works in this game or just studying enthusiasts who want to know more about the game. I don't really know if many people post guides on this platform, but I hope this counts!😅 Might seem like a lot to read for someone, but trust me, it's a lot better than reading wiki pages a whole day and memorising all of the stuff written in there. If this doesn't seem detailed enough I can make another, more advanced guide to luck, where I can teach you some luck calculations and things that can decrease your luck. Anyway, that all. Goodbye.

Aren’t lantern nights triggered by beating bosses, or is that a correlation/causation thing I’m imagining?
