Banners can be supported by almost any other block, including other banners and extended pistons. Due to a longstanding bug, sticky pistons fail to emit block updates when attempting to retract slime or honey if the block cannot be retracted (in this case due to push limit). You can use this to obtain floating banners, and then simply place your second banner against the back of the floating banner. Once built, this configuration is completely stable, as the banners mutually support each other.
I’m using a slab floor here as well, primarily for the cafe tables and soul speed, but it also helps sell the illusion even more since it gives the banners better proportions and means there’s no gap at the bottom.
