A little bit of collumn A, a little bit of collumn B. It is generally a sandbox game, but there are stories going on too

There isn’t really a main story other than “do what you want with the farm.”
However, your relationships progress with the townsfolk (that blue circle next to Haley’s picture in your screenshot is the status of your relationship. Blue is the lowest level). The personalities of the townsfolk will change over time depending on how much you interact with them.
You can play the game however you want. Some people never interact with the townsfolk, but you do unlock some cool things and see some cute cutscenes the more your relationships develop.
The town can change slightly as well over the course of the game, depending on your actions with certain characters/buildings. There are also other areas to unlock as you progress through the years.

It’s predominantly a sandbox, which is where the insane replay value comes from. The story and the world are there for flavor and can be ignored *for the most part*. As in, you *need* to do the story stuff to 100% a playthrough, but you can skip cutscenes and reduce interactions with characters to their most basic elements.
