I think your block palette is very nice, I think you could benefit from ‘bleeding the layers together’ a bit more. By that I mean introduce some more randomness rather than having discrete bands of blocks. I think this is a strong starting point!

It’s not bad at all for your first time. The bigger your build is the better your gradient will look especially when you’re going from a harsh dark color to a light color. You can also experiment with different types of gradients, my favorite is to make one based on where your light source is coming from but there are many types.

try adding some checkerboard patterns to it in places, and i’d recommend looking up ‘dithering’

i likeit! a recommendation if you will, put some ’stray’ blocks in different parts of the gradient, i think thatd help it look more ‘natural’
