Find a chunk numbered 4 (+/- 20) and follow that row of chunks and you are guaranteed to find
i.e. Chunk 4, 24, -16, -596, 864 etc.

I am genuinely curious as to why people don’t just use the portal to the end islands that spawns after killing the dragon.

Why haven’t you just circled the inner edge of the ring to start with? We found one in visible range from there without much fuss.
And if the answer is “because I can’t fly between the islands yet”, why have you not rehydrated a ghast in the end yet?
