As a tip to remove the dirt you gotta use a hammer and break it from the outer layer in for some reason also if you hammer wooden platforms you can make stairs

It’s a good start. As you progress, definitely try to move away from the boxy shape, experiment with materials, try thickening walls and roofs (I usually do two blocks for homely builds), and when you can, add some defense for events and whatnot. But it’s good if its your first!

if youre making a base, then you will need a spot that only made for crafting stations, and a another spot that will be utilized for storage, i will leave it up to you on how accessible the two will be with each other
you will also would want to make a bed as a spawn point for the base, optionally, you can put the nurse in that room so you can heal once you respawn
other than that youre right on track, making a base look nice will happen in time once you are able to gather enough resources

It’s a nice start, try using accents like grey brick and like that other guy said move away from the boxy shape, and I recommend some furniture as well.
It’s always nice to see new people playing this game, keep it up and have fun 🙂
