Go in creative and use invisible light sources

glass panes. make a chessboard grid where white is one block above the glass and black is two blocks above the glass, that way the panes are mostly invisible
then again you dont want string so idk if this or any other viable option works for you

I think adding light blocks in glass would prevent it along with the other options already listed. Could be remembering incorrectly.
