I've recently had my first in person Spanish lesson after a year long break.
Previously I got to B1 of Duolingo so I wasn't certain how to progress since I've forgotten a lot but I didn't want to start from a lower level.

When my new and awesome teacher Maria and I talked about my hobbies, she recommended I should play my favourite game in Spanish to pick up some grammar and expand vocabulary. Naturally my head went straight to Stardew Valley.

Since then I've been playing it in Spanish on a new save and it's been so helpful with Spanish but also it made the game feel fresh again.
I have 1100+ hours invested across both steam and nitendo switch saves but now every conversation or interaction feels new and teaches me new things.
I thought I'd share Maria's idea with you and I hope it helps some of youπŸ™

So cool! As a kid I got ahead in learning to read English (not my first language) by playing PokΓ©mon ruby on GBA, so this makes sense!

  2. That’s a great idea – I can learn how to say β€œyou’re starting to feel exhausted” in Spanish

I’ve done this with German! It’s great for limited immersion & learning new vocabulary terms/phrases

That’s awesome! I really want to try this, how do i change the language? (Sorry if it’s a dumb question, I’m not home right now so I can’t just look around and try and figure it out)

  5. Your teacher gave you great advice, my native language is Spanish and while growing up I played a lot of games in English since they weren’t translated which helped me A LOT with my vocabulary and grammar when I started taking classes. Β‘Buena suerte aprendiendo!

  6. I did it with Italian. Such games, where you see the same words/expressions many times are great for learning.

  7. A little OT but this is why I get so angry when people say young people have no interest in learning. If you had suggested to me that I play stardew to learn Spanish when I was in middle school, I would have ended up fluent in Spanish by high school.

The method matters and that’s why teachers are the most amazing people. Love this sooooo much.

  8. That’s actually so smart. I’ve heard about using your favorite shows and movies to learn Spanish but never considered using games too

I know what you mean. As a teenager I made a huge leap in learning english while playing undertale.
