I've been a long term terraria player and I really want to give minecraft a shot, but I'm struggling with the lack of a clear end goal.
so in terraria, the progression toward defeating moon lord and the boss-to-boss fights give the game a definite purpose but in minecraft I don't see that same sense of direction, which has always discouraged me from starting. To the veterans: how do you find motivation or a "point" to the game? What are your suggestions for a goal oriented player like me?

Boot it up, collect resources and find a nice spot to never play again.
That was a joke for the more dense crowd.
For a goal oriented player here is what I would do
1. Get full iron gear
2. Make a home base
3. Establish a nether base
4. Get diamond gear
5. Optional: make a villager trading hall (if done right it’s like npc housing in terraria)
6. Get full enchanted diamond gear
7. (Can go before or after 6) find a fortress and get blaze rods
8. Light the end portal
9. Defeat ender dragon
10. Get elytra
11. Get full netherite gear
12. (If on Java): defeat wither
13. Find ancient city
14. Defeat warden
15. (If on bedrock): defeat wither
If this still isn’t your cup of tea you could try completing the Minecraft achievements.
Minecraft doesn’t really *have* and end goal. It’s more of a sandbox game, where you finish individual projects, but still continue with progression and building. Even though it doesn’t have a specific end, you have to choose your own goals, like defeating both bosses, or taking on a dungeon structure.
Some projects include defeating the Ender Dragon (the main boss), building a nice base, or getting richer.
I do see your point though.
Many Minecraft players have a “two-week phase” (which I strongly discourage) where they start a world, get bored with it, burn out, and start another world. This generally takes about two weeks.
Build a small base to protect yourself at night and then dig down until you hit bedrock. Great you have a base and a mine. By now you hopefully have upgraded to iron pickaxe. If not then obtain iron pickaxe. Now mine 3 diamonds and make yourself a diamon pickaxe. Go to a flowing lava source and find obsidian. Mine 14 obsidian, 10 for portal and 4 for enchanting table. You may create your own obsidian by combining lava and water. Find 2 more diamonds. Get enough sugar and leather to make a book. Use 4 obsidian, 2 diamonds and a book to make enchanting table, craft remaining obsidian into a portal (recommend in enclosed or otherwise ‘safe’ area due to potential for mobs to portal from nether).
Congratulations, you can now go to the nether to obtain nether specific materials and enchant gear with your levels. The game will be easier with these things for hopefully obvious reasons.

Well you have to just think in 3d and don’t forget that spiders climb walls.
My goal is usually to build cool houses.
