The Highs and Lows of Terraria — About Oliver Supercut

A supercut of @AboutOliver ‘s Terraria streams, specifically streams 12-17. He played this roughly a year ago without any information about the game, and did not look at any wikis or stuff like that (which does lead to a lot of frustration.) He also does not read chat during streams so he doesn’t get spoiled.

He did not play after these streams, mostly due to the reasons he says at the end.

  1. While expert mode most definitely made it a lot harder for him, I feel like his biggest challenge was his own stubbornness. The most obvious example is him just refusing to build any sort of platform/arena for bosses. Wasn’t shown in this video, but after a queen slime attempt in his live stream he literally said “I guess I could build a bunch of platforms, but that just seems so absurd.” He also was very stubborn to switch off a weapon he liked even if it was severely outclassed in his current tier of progression (Magic missile), and it almost seems like he was choosing his weapons based strictly on how much damage they did, rather than consistent DPS, using the magic missile over other weapons like the shadow flame daggers or laser rifle (Granted towards the end he did seem to get out of this habit, and started to use more consistent weapons).

Not trying to hate on Oliver or anything, but I really do think he could’ve completed the playthrough if he just played ever so slightly smarter and just made arenas for bosses. He probably wouldn’t have found the bosses so challenging, therefore not hate them, if he just built a couple platforms.

  2. Oliver completely ruined the game for himself by outright refusing to strategise or use the tools he had at his disposal or go searching for more. He then proceeds to blame it wholly on the game, so he gets no sympathy from me

1:21:35 he literally just stands in still in front of Skeletron and lets him take away half of his health, then goes on to complain that he’s losing too hard even though on that awful attempt he still got a quarter of the boss’ health.

He complains about being constantly interrupted whilst refusing to summon any of his minions or wall things off or even shut the damn doors to his house.

  3. This genuinely was not the game, but his own stubbornness to not play this any other way than his own unorthodox ways that was his downfall in this playthrough. Even halfway in the last video you can hear his frustrations mount, so you already knew hardmode was gonna kick his ass to either adapt and do some research or quit. Unfortunately, he chose the later.

It's a shame, but the Terraria community won't lose sleep over a single small content creator becoming a hater. Oh well

  4. So yeah, killing the Wall of Flesh puts you in Hard Mode, which is true in every sense compared to before, sad to see how it becomes frustrating. It's usually recommended to focus on collecting the new ore so that you get better armor and weapons (usually re-exploring the holes you already dug).
I also hope this doesnt destroy your enjoyment, going directly to expert makes it very hard…

  5. Oliver needs to play the new update on normal, his only problem was the difficulty and that would fix it, and not to mention the update made it a lot more newbie friendly

  6. it is so frustrating watching him die over and over again out of sheer stubbornness and then blaming the game when he hasnt upgraded any of his weapons despite numerous opportunities, nor has he built any sort of proper arenas that he already knows how to do from skeletron

  7. Well, even though it´s sad, I can´t say I´m surprised. This game is just as unintuitive to figure out as Minecraft while being harder by a long shot, especially on expert mode. It´s also very easy to sit here and watch him, calling out how bad some of the choices were – at the end of the day though, a lot of times it really just isn´t obvious at all what to do. Like how much of a boss fight is dependant on your mobilty and arena. Many other games just don´t have that sort of feature. Of course, how was he supposed to know about wings, the guide gave him the hint with the wyverns but he also gives a bunch of other hints that aren´t as important.
It was a bit disappointing seeing him refusing to change his gameplay approach, not giving other classes and weapons a go since mage is fairly challenging, but tbh most people would have quit LONG before Oliver did if they were playing this completely blind. Maybe Terraria just isn´t meant to be for this type of experience. I still firmly believe, that the best way for someone to get introduced to the game is multiplayer with a good friend who lets you do your own stuff but is always there to help you out and give a little push in the right direction. Although many don´t follow the purist approach of refusing spoilers like him, I´ve seen basically this story play out so many times before. The sentence "I have no idea what to even do/ where to go" is almost universal whenever I see people try this game out for the first time. It also, just like Rain World, really isn´t for everybody. I would say that it´s objectively a great game, I have ~3000 hours in it now, but I can fully understand every person who says they don´t like it personally because this weird hybrid of sandbox, RPG, 2D bossrush, whatever – just isn´t doing it for them.

With all that being said, it´s absolutely fair that Oliver quit. With his approach to the game, it wouldn´t have gotten better. Bosses will just continue to get harder and if you don´t know where to head, you´ll be just as undergeared. (Btw, I am absolutely not blaming him, the same approach made his first Rain World playthrough into one of the greatest things I have ever seen in gaming, it just didn´t work out here)
Yes, he should have laid more focus on actually field testing some weapons, he DEFINITELY should have built arenas and every bossfight he did, his mobility was less than what would be good. In the end though, these things really don´t come naturally. I respect him for trying, and I can´t blame him for failing. If he ever revisists the game, I hope he does it with a friend.

Also, thank you for doing these supercuts, I don´t see enough people appreciating the hard work you put into it enough. Great work! <3

  8. I feel like he never even gave terraria a real shot like he did with Minecraft. Obviously he did try to learn things but he never really tried to figure out the classes which I think is one of the easiest things to understand. He refused to build an arena and experiment which he didn’t think that way while playing Minecraft. Idk if he had some bias while coming into this but he gave Minecraft a way better chance. I also hate when he says “I like hard game but” like no you don’t, every game you play is pretty simple and easy, this is the first truly difficult games I’ve seen him play and ofc he quits it. I like the guy but his complaints are entirely his fault🥀

  9. few tips. you seemed to cling way too much into weapons that you liked rather than were usefull there is more than just base damage and also you seemed to be very obilvious of your surroundings, making you unable to see what was dealing damage to you, in prehardmode this isnt much of an issue, but in hardmode the enemies tend to launch lots of projectiles . what I noticed is that you only focused on what is the highest number in a weapon rather than ckecking the fps and its utility, ( ejem, ejem BEE GRANADES). Lastly, in expert mode, an arena is esential for a new player like you, specially on hard mode, so dont think of it as "absurd"

  10. I started watching oliver because of his terraria streams and the I binged all his other playthroughs. Honestly I feel like terraria is just the kind of game that cant realy reasonably be played completly blind.

  12. I genuinely do think a fair share of his complaints were valid. A lot of this stream reminded me of my first and last time playing Terraria up to Hard Mode.
