They can be put anywhere, not just in your farm. Like chests can be placed anywhere.

I place my two shipping bins outside the Skull Cavern and outside the Volcano Dungeon. In essence, in places when I need to quickly clear out my inventory while making a profit (and get the full money out of the deal unlike the upgraded trash cans).

I put one outside of Clint’s because when opening a ton of geodes, you want to sell them instead of putting them in the trash (Items that are already donated and you don’t need them for crafting/trading/etc.).
