I think it’s only been less than two years since they took out that feature.
As for private messages itself, I imagine it was useful for a good number of people, but most of my private messages were clan/group advertisements or spam that, oddly wasn’t from bots. Sometimes though I’d get actually relevant PMs from friends though, related to any of our places, or a group we were in. So it wasn’t a totally useless feature at the end of the day.
