It’s hard for me to agree that he simply “does this to himself”. Depression and alcoholism are extremely debilitating and not much of a direct choice. Most alcoholics do not want to be alcoholics or enjoy it.

I’m lucky in that I am not prone to addiction, but I have been suicidal and self destructive before and it’s kind of a wild take to say people do this to themselves, as if we wake up and make the free and conscious decision to simply lose all ability to feel pleasure and happiness.

As someone with an alcoholic parent I do not blame alcoholics for having an addiction, but it gets to a point of someone out right refusing to even get help that can make it unbearable to be around them.
Luckily Shane chooses to get help so I can appreciate that.

Shane isn’t the nicest to be around, but let’s not victim blame.

I am not making fun of Shane in any way, shape, or form. I understand that he struggles with alcoholism and depression, and I have personally known someone in real life who dealt with similar challenges And saw they made the same mistakes over and again. I am also not denying that it can be extremely difficult at times to make better choices while dealing with those kinds of struggles. I’m not saying that it is the end for Shane.

Slightly redeemable character arc though I suppose.
