Terraria has a yoyo problem

June 30th will mark 11 years since Terraria added the now iconic yoyo class to the game. However, in it’s current state it’s a little broken so let’s talk about how to fix that.

  1. i don’t want to watch this video bc yo-yo’s are my favorite weapon and i use them almost exclusively in every playthrough

  2. I think the primary issue with yo-yos is that there’s not a whole lot of crazy ones. Sure there’s yo-yos like the hel-fire and amarok that give debuffs. However, up until a few updates ago, with the debut of the hive five, the only yo-yo with a really special feature was the Terrarian, which suffers from the same issue as every other Moon Lord drop: you get it at the end.
    Before finishing the video and seeing your ideas on how to fix yo-yos, I’d say Terraria would totally benefit from going back and giving some love to more underwhelming yo-yos (I’ve always thought the artery/malaise, kraken, and the eye of cthulhu yo-yos were kinda lame for what they were.) by giving them special abilities like the Hive Five’s bees and the Terrarian’s afterimages.

    Also that original yo-yo only play-through you did 11 years ago (jeez, time flies) made me get Terraria on the family computer when I was a kid so I could try it myself, thanks Chippy.

    EDIT: alright after watching the video I gotta say the Kraken move idea is pretty great. But I still totally think they gotta give some preexisting yo-yo’s a little bit of extra funk to make them more appealing side-grades to on tier yo-yos with a higher base damage stat.

  3. Yes!!!! Thank you! We really need a post golem yo-yo and the early Hardmode yo-yo progression is also kinda wack. Maybe a Martian saucer yo-yo. Please relogic !!!!

  4. Wow! Never expextes this vid from you, but i wholeheartedly agree that yoyos have a bit of an issue, including the Kraken not veing a Duke Fishron drop, more for themeing then progression, but all the same. W Vid!

  5. Amen, most of the views you mention at the end is perfect. I wanted another nice yoyo buff before Wall of Flesh, and the combined accessories in prehardmode does help. But yep, if you want to do the post Plantera events, you can't even cross Wave 10 with the EOC Yoyo. It just falls off at that stage. It's similar with boomerangs subclass, but there at least we have the Pala hammer and the Golem hatchet.

  6. the changes you suggest are great. but you could add a halloween and christmas themed yoyos to the respective invations. an alien yoyo, you could even make another accessory if warranted

  7. Sorry I’m waffling but I’ve felt the same about the yo-yo class as you do for years now and I feel kind of vindicated!! Maybe we can get a small yo-yo themed update soon

  8. I'm so glad chippy is addressing the issues with yo-yo. It's my favorite subclass and the class that'll make me want to play Melee, but it feels so underpowered now and every other class had tweaks, so yoyo feels basic and boring now.

  9. I think the suggested tier swaps are a pretty good idea

    Though I think theres a more significant problem with Yoyos than their wacky progression, and that's how they all feel identical

    Only 5 of the 21 Yoyos actually have unique gimmicks, the rest are just moderately higher stats

  10. Me and my friends are playing terraria only using a specific type of melee weapon. I am using only yo-yos, and my friend only uses boomerangs.
    I wish that in some future update, these weapons get a little attention, with new itens and equipments.

  11. if they are working on some overhauls for balance changes, I have an idea. Make yo-yos a magic weapon, with the addition of the magic yo-yo bag it makes sense imo. Plus it would help solve 2 major issues, melee getting all the weapons, mage having not great starting weapons. Instead of a yo-yo having a specific time it can stay out, different yo-yos drain mana at different rates, this would also make it easier to add cool effects that make sense, like yo-yos that suck targets towards it, magical flashes ECT… Also the moonlord yo-yo feels like a magic weapon imo

  12. The problem is that yoyos aren't different enough. Aside from the Hive-Five and the Terrarian, none of the yoyos have any special effects at all aside from maybe causing a debuff. It's just stat changes, which is no different than comparing a Wooden Broadsword to a Titanium Broadsword.
    It's incredibly uninspired beyond the fact that you're using yoyos as weapons and there's more variety in playing the "broadsword class" than there is in playing the yoyo class.

  13. There is no yo-yo class, it's just melee. The sentry class is miles worse if every class gets divided into sub-classes.

  14. I think aside from buffs and a few minor changes, I really wish they would add more yoyos after Plantera, like something crafted from solar fragments, because they could go ahead and make each celestial pillar have three craftable items since the stardust already does.
