If you're doing it in hardcore, then what's the point? The whole thing about hardcore is the danger of having one life, if you cant die then might aswell just play on regular survival
In normal survival, its fine i guess. I mean, dying is part of the game and you already have totems, so i dont really see the point in doing this since it would just be easier to play on easy mode if you're willing to completely eliminate death, sure i get that it sucks losing all of your items but thats part of the game, if you dont like it then play with keep inventory

You can do the same thing in multiplayer with a fishing rod, trapdoor and pressure plate, nether portal, and floating pearl
You can place another armor stand set up with a observer on the water which will turn on a piston which will push a block onto the pearl
